Matthews v Crolla
Matthews v Crolla
This fight is scheduled for April 21st. I think Crolla wins surprised Matthews is able to fight after his stoppage loss for British,
Re: Matthews v Crolla
His fight for the Euro title (against Rees) was a TD, not a loss. He was stopped in an IBO title fight.leforge wrote:This fight is scheduled for April 21st. I think Crolla wins surprised Matthews is able to fight after his stoppage loss for British,
Re: Matthews v Crolla
Thought Derry looked like he needed a rest after ibo fight to sort his nose out. Can only see it going again in this fight.

I did not phrase well was meant to say surprised allowed to fight for British title after stoppage loss.earsjohn wrote:His fight for the Euro title (against Rees) was a TD, not a loss. I'm hearing that Murray v Barker is going to go to bids for the UK Middleweight -Barker was stopped last time out.leforge wrote:I did not phrase well was meant to say surprised allowed to fight for British title after stoppage loss.earsjohn wrote:His fight for the Euro title (against Rees) was a TD, not a loss. Danny McIntosh was stopped by Gutknecht last time out and he fights Bellew for the UK title next.

It's different when a fighter has been stopped at a higher level to be honest... if it had been a stoppage against a domestic competitor theres reason not to sanction it (unless in exceptional circumstances)earsjohn wrote:I'm hearing that Murray v Barker is going to go to bids for the UK Middleweight -Barker was stopped last time out.leforge wrote:I did not phrase well was meant to say surprised allowed to fight for British title after stoppage loss.earsjohn wrote: His fight for the Euro title (against Rees) was a TD, not a loss. What? Matthews vs Crolla? Anthony will KO Derry with no question.
Re: Matthews v Crolla
Derry needs a good 6-8 months break with the nose injury and hes hardly been out of training for a fight since his comeback, this has the feel of him trying to get 1 last decent pay day retiring
Crolla body shots around the 4th

Re: Matthews v Crolla
I like Derry, but this doesn't make sense.
Ben Murphy should have been given the shot. He walked through previously unbeaten Tony Owen in his last bout at lightweight and gave Theophane all he could handle after taking the fight at three days notice in a weight category higher than he campaigns in!
Derry should take some time out as has been mentioned, but regardless of that, he shouldn't get this shot over Murphy when you look at his last loss against the Italian. Also, while the Rees ending wasn't his fault, to my mind it is further evidence that he perhaps cannot stand up to top level punishment on his snoz.

its a good fight this, who else would put up a fight at light weight to crolla like derry matheews, apart from murray but he wont fight crolla. derry has had a brilliant run of fights and no one deserves a shot at the lonsdale more than him. good luck derry mate

Ben Murphy has lost 3 of his last 4 fights and won 2 out of his last 7.herb wrote:I like Derry, but this doesn't make sense.

Dont get me wrong, i really enjoyed the Murphy vs Theopane fight but Maloney must have pulled some strings to get that one passed with the board.
Derry Mathews is English champion which is why he got the nod, would be a decent fight at a different time... too soon in my opinion.

Cant believe Derry is getting a shot at a british title, after coming back&doing ok in prizefighter what has he done?? hes hung tough with Rees for a few rounds&beat a over the hill Lawton&beat 3 novices in Unsworth,Watson&Jennings,Then losing to some dude who to be honest none of us have heard off....but after the top 5,there isnt no contenders....This will be Mathews last fight id have thought

Re: Matthews v Crolla
Aside from John Murray who is finding his level (hes discovered its not world level), then mathews is actually next in lineTommy Gunn13 wrote:Cant believe Derry is getting a shot at a british title, after coming back&doing ok in prizefighter what has he done?? hes hung tough with Rees for a few rounds&beat a over the hill Lawton&beat 3 novices in Unsworth,Watson&Jennings,Then losing to some dude who to be honest none of us have heard off....but after the top 5,there isnt no contenders....This will be Mathews last fight id have thought
Everyone above crolla is onto better things and below him you have ben murphy or willie limond, both just been defeated for british titles
Ricky Burns - wbo champ
Kevin Mitchell - gonna fight ricky burns
gavin rees - euro champ
anthony crolla - british champ
john murray - in limbo, finding his level
derry mathews - english champ
ben murphy - won 2 out of last 7, just defated for british light-welter
willie limond - just been defeated for british
john watson - moved up to light-welter
carl joanneson - fighting goodiwn in eliminator
chris goodwin - fighting johanneson in eliminator
stephen jennings - not enough experience
(using boxrec ratings)

Re: Matthews v Crolla
As i said after the top five,Burns(above Brit level) Mitchell,Rees,Murray&Crolla there is nobody....Crolla is bang on to win the londale outright with the likes of Limond&Mathews as best contenders
Re: Matthews v Crolla
Yeah, can't really see this ending too well for Derry. Crolla with a mid-rounds stoppage for me.
