me against paul mccloskey
Re: me against paul mccloskey
This isn't as black and white as a lot of people seem keen to make out. I've got no bais towards or against any parties here but this did seem like the obvious out come.
Curtis probably shouldn't have started talking about this until it was cleared with FW, after all he is tied to a promotional contract with him, which he was happy to sign at the time, and since when he has been allowed to box on two Coldwell shows and even after losing to Peter McDonagh he was given the high profile opportunity to box Gavin (where he did himself proud). It is understandable that FW needs all 'names' on board to box on allegedly as he needs to keep raising it's profile and picking up subscribers, and Curtis could easily headline a card boxing Miles or someone else in a 140 eliminator - it fills another Friday night headliner (whether you like it or not as a matchup).
It's understandable Curtis wants the opportunity to box McCloskey as he's obviously an ambitious guy who isn't afraid of a test and near aged 32 knows he needs to get a move on. Announcing the fight on forums and the media is a good way to pressure FW into allowing him to box on a rival promotion, it was realistically his best chance of forcing the fight through so fair does to him .
Equally this was a good opportunity for Eddie Hearn to make FW look bad. He knew Coldwell would want the fight (as he should given Curtis age, the opportunity presented and McCloskey's underwhelming recent form) but that FW would be unlikely to rubber stamp it. Makes FW look like a bitter old man and Eddie as the Fairly god mother throwing around wishes and gifts! I'm not anti Matchroom - they've done a terrific job with Kell Brook, much better than FW got close to doing, but all this controversy hides the fact that their plan for a near 33 year old Dudey who has not fought for near 5/6 six months already and looked very bad then is a fight against a comparative novice (rated 10 in the Uk and 94 in the world) whose big wins are against Steffy Bull, Dean Hickman and Gary McArthur, all who were a good bit short of British title level. It is a shocking bad fight for Dudey, at his age a complete waste of his limited time left in the game.
This was an obvious out come. I'm not sticking up or out to condem any particular party here, all have faults in this, but it is hardly surprising. There are a few too many Hearn nuthuggers and FW haters here, both of whom deserve praise and critisism in close to equal measure. Bar announcing it too early Curtis deserves credit for wanting to jump a good few levels and go straight for the jugular, but he shouldn't be surprised at the outcome

Re: me against paul mccloskey
I'm not sure Curtis did announce it? (I can't find it anyway maybe i'm wrong) the only thing i can find is this particular thread which all he has stated is that the fight is now off?

It's one of them things.
If you signed for a football team and are warming the bench, then get an offer from a rival team for a game - obviously the player wants to get involved, but does the team with the contract allow it ?

Re: me against paul mccloskey
dont agree with some of the posts on here accepting this bullshit. the fighters want to fight and the fans want to see the best fights made. its the whole mayweather and pac situation(assuming mayweather actually wants the fight) again, where promoters and managers egos overrule the importance of the fighters and the fights. i know its a business and all that, but ffs as boxing fans,( and it is after all our money thats being paid out) we shouldnt just accept it .
its a crying shame that fighters with a passion for the sport, and who express that with blood ,sweat and tears are fucked over time and time again by the money men.

Exactly..it's that vicious circle, at a certain level you can whore yourself out to most promoters, try and get on their shows. But at title level they will want options...you become THEIR fighter...
No surprise it didn't happen

Re: me against paul mccloskey
Whatever happened to the clause that says a Promotor should act in the best interests of the boxer ?
On this occasion is that true ?
Probably his biggest pay day on a big stage, and a platform to spring forward.
To counter balance this, we don't know the reasons why the fight was rejected.
Despite it being a good pay day, maybe the money on offer wasn't deemed to be enough ?
Anyway it's history.
Curtis can now focus on the Brtish Title Eliminator.

This is a shame, though it's worth pointing out that 1) Bellew is appearing on an Eddie Hearn card, albeit co-promoted by Dave Coldwell - FW could easily pull that fight if the mood took him; and 2) After FW had won the purse bids for Lee Purdy (Hearn) and Denton Vassell (Hatton) said contest mysteriously was scrapped. Bottom line is they're all as bad as each other sadly, it's the nature of the beast.
