Fighters inactivety : Is it increasing and the reasons why ?

I was just wondering whether boxers fight less these days and if so the reasons behind that. You seem to get fighter like Kid Galahad fighting on a regular basis, but other fighters, some of whom are on this site, don't appear to fight very often. I know you get alsorts of pro boxers and at varying levels of ability and i can understand that when you reach a particular level it becomes harder too match top domestic / European level fighters with appropriate opponents. Some fighters seem to rack up 10 to 15 fights in a relatively short space of time and others seem to take ages in getting fights under their belts.

I watched an interview with Tim Witherspoon the other day and he was talking about his shot at the title against Holmes after only 15 or 16 pro fights and commented that it was more unusual back then, but is now more common place. As someone who doesn't know the inner workings of the sport business, promoting, managing wise, it would be good to hear peoples views on the subject. Is it a case that fighters reach higher peaks earlier than in previous era's with less fights being had or is it more a case of the financial cost of shows etc limiting how many times fighters can actual appear in the ring.

In the build up to Groves/Degale Barry McGuigan touched on this in his newspaper column explaining why George and James were involved in such a big fight despite their lack of experience. He was basically saying that there weren't enough boxing shows nowadays for fighters to get the experience they need due to the increased cost of putting them on so fighters have to learn in the gym whereas in years gone by boxers would do a lot more learning in their fights.
