Coldwell Boxing: This Friday's show in Bolton cancelled.

Post by Coldwell Boxing »

Coldwell Boxing regret to inform that this Friday's (February 24) show at Bolton De Vere White Hotel has had to be postponed due to the withdrawal of main event boxer Giuseppe Lauri. The former European title challenger contacted promoter David Coldwell late last night claiming he was unable to box Manchester's David Barnes because of a heavy flu

The event will now be moved back two weeks and take place on Sunday, March 11 at the same venue

"Everybody involved with the show is absolutely devastated by the news," said Coldwell

"We were all looking forward to another successful promotion and keen to watch a fascinating main event. Unfortunately, injuries and illnesses happen in boxing and there is very little anybody can do about it.

We decided to postpone the show rather than go ahead with an alternative main event for a number of reasons. Firstly, there simply wasn't enough time to find a suitable opponent, either at home or abroad and, secondly, we are looking to maintain a certain standard of quality at Coldwell Boxing and I refuse to scrap together a makeshift main event for fans who have spent hard-earned money to buy tickets for my shows.

Although the show had no television backing, we're not going to cheat fans out of the main event they all paid to see. I'd rather wait two weeks and go about things the right way."

Coldwell Boxing would also like to stress that tickets already purchased for the February 24 show will be valid for the new date of March 11. If you have purchased a ticket for the original date, but are now unable to make the rearranged date, refunds will be available at point of sale.

Shame that, was a good fight that, for a non TV bill especially.

Fair play to them though most other promoters would just get in a journeyman or foreign bum and have Barnes fight him over 6 or 4.

I agree with the postponement if it means upholdong the standard & not bringing a foreign journeyman.

its a brave stance from dave, i hope that local hotels etc are as generous in not charging cancellation fees etc for the paying public who will have to cancel and re-book.

Can't win can you sometimes.
I've advertised a decent small hall non tv show. Lost the main event and decided not to bring in some Hungarian for a one round blow out.

Dave whilst i agree the postponement is probably the best thing you could have done , there no doubt will be some people who wont be happy , wether it be losing hotel fees or being unable to make the new date , But to be fair i know its impossible to keep everyone happy , if it was possible to make 100% of people happy then the man who could do it would become the best promotor that ever lived :TU:

Is this an afternoon or evening show? I've got tickets with a few mates but won't be available until late afternoon. Would still like to go if possible though. Cheers.

Exactly, you can't keep everyone happy.
I'm not too happy myself about it, we've spent a lot of time and money advertising the original date, and have also had flights and hotels booked that cost money. Now have to do the same for the new date. Boxer's have trained for a date and so now have to change their plans also.
When it comes to hotels, this is a small hall show, not too many people tend to stay over for small hall non tv shows. usually it's just the locals. However, i do accept there may be some that have, but i'm sure there would have been far more people unhappy at paying for hotels PLUS and uncompetitive match up.

Much better to postpone rather than cheat the public with some poor last minute opponent.

Not all promoters i can think of would have made the same decision. Deffo the least worst option :TU:

This cancellation has actually given the revised date plenty of exposure.

Every cloud Dave.

Another black eye for Hungarian boxing.

Actually I'm not too unhappy about this in a purely selfish way. I couldn't make Friday's show because my Mrs has booked us a mid-week spa break (as you do) but I can definitely make the revised date. Full credit to Dave for postponing rather than putting on an inferior show.

I had an ad in the programme, but I def. agree with the decision to postpone. Quality over quantity!
