2012 NY Daily News Golden Gloves (85th Ann.)

Post by NYAmateur90 »

Opening night is right around the corner...

"Super heavyweights from the open class will be featured on the tournament’s opening night at B.B. King’s Blues Club on Thursday, Jan. 19. The premiere will also feature some fierce action from the female side when the 141-pounders take the ring."

Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more- ... -1.1004856

The tournament should pack some good action just like last year and we'll probably see more different talent now that all of New York State can be involved...

For those of ya'll who know the weightclasses well I'm making predictions of the Open Class...(although we may see new names since all of NYS can be around)

114- Hamzah Alnuzaili (although I wouldn't be suprised if Juan Roman beats him once again...and you still have Jordan Rodriguez and Julian Ramphal among notables)

123- Jamie Estrada

132- Titus Williams, pulled out wins against Bryant Cruz, Marcos Suarez, and Marlon Brown in the Metros...I think it could come down to him and Marcos Suarez in the Finals...Titus beat Marcos pretty one-sided in the Metros but Suarez didn't look to be in his best condition so I'm sure he'll be looking for revenge....and Marlon Brown should be in the mix too, his height could cause anyone problems if he uses it to his advantage...

141- Wesley Ferrer...past Gloves winner and reigning Metro champ but 141 is deep

152- Possibly the most loaded weightclass I think it could come down to the same fighters in the Metros, Chris Galeano and Patrick Day...fight wasn't very eventful but Galeano pulled it out although it was ugly with a lot of holding and a ridiculous point being taken from Day...wouldn't be suprised to see another name pull an upset though...lotta good fighters at 152...

165- DeVaun Lee...I hear he's moving down to 165, I think he was real cautious last year against Marcus Browne and really didn't give a good effort in the Finals...he won the Metros at 178 (although Jeff Laguerre might disagree) and can be awkard to fight...I like Akil Frederick too who can crack but he'll have to really let his hands go if they meet at some point or in the finals

178- You'd have a tough time choosing against potential Olympian Marcus Browne, 3 time champ and this could be his 5th year in a row in the Finals...unless he's facing another Naim Terbunja or awkward European styled fighter, I don't see anyone beating him...although if Far Rockaway's Joe Williams dropped down to 178 he could give Marcus problems with his high workrate

201-Iegor Plevako

I don't know the 201 Plus weightclass too well so I won't make a pick there...

Anyone else up for some Gloves discussion? :bag:

Yea I'm not too suprised...maybe just the fact that I don't know the guy who beat him...I think Jaime's style could be exploited by the right kinda fighter, maybe that's what happened...

Tuesday Jan. 31 Bronx, NY

123 Open
Michael Stoute (Veterans Memorial BC) def Erick Castro (Ardon Sweet Science) 5-0
Francisco Veldez (Gleason's Gym) def Jaime Estrada (Newburgh BC) 5-0

Abner Guadalupe (Willis Ave BC) def. Bryan Adorno (Aaron Davis BC) DQ-2
Hector Ortiz (Mendez BC) def. Michael Rodriguez (Gleason's Gym) RET-1

Hmm interesting to see Hamzah and Roman moved up...I think Michael Stoute and Hamzah Alnuzaili would make the most interesting Finals matchup...we'll see what happens

Nah no clue...one of my boys is 132 Open, he hasn't got his letter yet...I talked to Marcus Browne, same thing...

I've heard a lotta stories about Teron, wonder if he trains hard...I can't believe he can still make 141 at that stature...he should probably beat Wesley but Wesley is in good shape and is a solid fighter and does work...

Marcus Browne got a soft touch, was a spotlight night for him...good in some ways in that he got a warmup fight but that doesn't really prepare him for the tough road he has to take at the Nationals...those guys will be coming for his head

Wow that was a good card. Patrick Day fight was really exciting but I though the stoppage was bs but Day was still dominating the fight, Marcus is tough fighter.Jeremy Forientino looked good also he stopped the kid in 3rd round he looked in good shape. Christoper Galeano look sharp and crisp with his punches.

Tuesday Feb 21
Kennedy Memorial Park- Hempstead, NY

152 Open
Chordale Booker (Team Freeform) def Dwayne Allen (Gleason's Gym) 5-0
Christopher Galeano (John's Gym) def Orlando Ortiz (Morris Park BC) 4-1
Stephan Rogulskyi (NY Athletic Club) def Justin Walker (Judah Bros) RSC-2
Peter Dobson (Havoc BC) def Jose Collazo (Atlas Cops & Kids) 5-0
Juan Mancilla (Long Island BC) def Mack Babb (New Legend BC) 3-2
Daniel Gonzalez (Universal BC) def Laurence Covington (Hempstead BC) 5-0
Jeremy Fiorentino (Win Or Die BC) def Khaalid Billings (Havoc BC) RSC-3
Patrick Day (Freeport PAL) def Marcus Beckford (Hempstead BC) RSC-3

165 Novice
Anthony Merete (Veterans Memorial) def Nicholas Gialourakis (Unnattached) 3-2
Donald Ngwang (John's Gym) def Jon Christ (Unattached) RSC-2
Claude Paul (Freeport PAL) def Tariq Ali (D'Awesome BC) RSC-1

My thoughts
Galeano beat Ortiz with pretty much ease, Ortiz only has an inside game and Galeano was far too good of a boxer...if Galeano was a puncher he may have stopped Ortiz...
Rogulskyi and Walker was entertaining while it lasted but I don't think either of them are as polished as the name guys in the division......Peter Dobson boxed circles around Jose Collazo for the most part...Mancilla-Babb could have went either way, Mancilla was the aggressor though...Danny Gonzalez outworked Covington

Fiorentino looked alright, if Billings was in shape it could have been a way more competitive interesting fight...Billings was breathing hard and holding after just one round and the ref waved it off in the 3rd because of the holding...shame cuz he does have skills...

Patrick Day looked real sharp, I've seen him spar Beckford plenty of times and he always got the better of him but I didn't expect a stoppage(although I thought one of the standing 8's was iffy)...Patrick is just a better fighter than Beckford plain and simple...

I didn't catch the 65 novices but I did see on tape Claude Paul catch Tariq Ali with a nice left hook and Ali wasn't in good enough to shape to continue...

I think just like the Metros, 152 Open will come down to Patrick Day and Christopher Galeano...Galeano won that bout but it was close and Day lost a questionable point for holding when both guys were doing a lotta holding...was an ugly fight...I'm sure Day will try to fight him differently....Galeano has a tough style...

132 Open will be going Thursday Night in Staten Island...

I feel bad for my buddy Akil Frederick from Mendez Boxing Club, got caught with a nice shot, went to a neutral corner to get his bearings straight and the ref waved it off...the video was on YouTube earlier but was taken down (I wonder why...hmm). He was hurt but in certain good enough shape to keep fighting...just a bad stoppage...shame cuz I really thought he was a favorite to be in the Finals this year...smh
