I'm surprised that Gene Tunney hasn't been mentioned more.

It might be something to do with those very old fight films not being at a true speed, so it might be difficult for some to decipher just how quick the fighters of Tunney's era really were.

From the old days, I think that Jim Corbett is astonishingly underated in this department today. Tunney also both were quick. Though i got the feeling that Greb may have been a touch quicker than Tunney, if he qualifies as a heavyweight.I think that Corbett was the quickest of the old guys, even though Jeffries and Johnson both had underated speed. Johnson in particular. Dempsey was quick too in his prime, but i dont think he matches corbett or Tunney. Billy Conn might be worth a shot also. I cant really see any of the modern superheavys as being worthy of consideration, although Tyson was sensationally quick, and of Course Ali and Patterson are right up there.

To be honest (assuming he qualifies), I think that Roy Jones Jr would probably be the quickest heavyweight i have ever seen. either that or Ruiz was so slow he made him look like pure lightning.
It's all about opinions, isn't it?

If you just nailed it down to the ultimate speedsters, you'd probably only have 4 or 5 HWs mentioned by every single poster & then the thread would be redundant.

By throwing other fighters in the mix; some of which may not spring to mind for many, makes for a more interesting thread overall.

I'm not sure what you mean by this comment. The thread is about the fastest HWs and didn't mention anything about the nominations being restricted to only ATG HWs. It's fair to say that a guy like Hunter had similar speed to any other HW fighter in history. It's not like there were any HWs in history who were like The Flash and clearly displayed speed well beyond any other HW in history.

Guys like Ali, Tyson and Patterson may have accomplished more than most, but I'm pretty confident that have been a lot of club fighters in the past who had comparable speed to these guys. None of them had superhuman powers.

Top tier clay/ali ,tyson, patterson, dempsey and the young michael dokes....that first round blitz of weaver was awesome.....tubbs , joe frazier had very fast hands.

Of guys who had single very quick shots larry holmes jab was very quick. razor ruddocks left smash was like a laser.....

Of the lesser tier, bruce seldons hands could be quick, RJJnr if for one night only at HW,holyfield...
and of the really lower tier mitch green

I like the "Mitch Green" pick. He was extremely quick with the defensive tactics against Tyson.

May as well mention "James "Quick" Tillis". He was quite quick in his heyday.Very elusive.Just like Green, very swift defensive tactics to go the distance with Tyson.

"Jerry Quarry" could really let the hands go ablazin against certain opponents as well.

Greg Page, definitely fast.Mitch Green was very fast when he was younger. As was Dokes, Tucker, Tubbs, Tillis, Snipes, and Williams.All-time pick would probably be Ali, followed by Patterson, Tyson, and Holmes.

Heavyweight club fighters with more Speed than Ali, Tyson and patterson? I find that hard to believe.

Tongue in cheek, and on a very technical basis. Would it be (complete with asterisk): *Roy Jones Jr?

More formal...I'd go with Ali overall. Patterson perhaps purely handspeed.
