Weirdest boxing moments

Post by Ezzard »

Spurred on by Del and Haye here is my craziest, most off the wall, things in my opinion that have happened in boxing whilst I've been following ther sport…

1) Frank W’rren getting shot
2) Tony Wilson’s mum - “When stilettos go crazy”
3) Tyson bites Holyfield’s ear
4) Lee Roy Murphy-Chisanda Mutti - double knock down
5) Fan-Man - Holyfield-Bowe II

Tim Tomashek (was that his name?) called out of the crowd to fight Tommy Morrison after the original opponent refused to leave the dressing room.

Some that haven't been mentioned.

Larry Holmes throwing at the final bell of the Holyfield fight.

Dempsey trying to leave the ring after the 1st round of the Willard fight.

Elijah Tillery kicking Riddick Bowe.

Andrew Golota biting Sampson P'ouha's neck.

Willie Pep winning a round without throwing a punch.

Duran quitting against Leonard.

The boxer who couldn't work out how to get in the ring and ended up rolling under the ropes.

Monte Barret tripping over the ropes against Haye.

Collins and all his hypnotised stuff was pretty strange as well. Worked wonders but was weird at the time.

Yep and Coetzee was stopped in that round.
I'm sure my favourite poster used to highlight it as one of many reasons why Coetzee was one of the best heavyweights of all time...

There's a certain alleged (and thankfully untelevised) incident involving Tony Tucker, Tony's trainer, a teddy bear and oral pleasure before the Lennox Lewis bout

Lloyd Honeyghan charging across the ring and flattening Johnny Bumphus when he was still sitting on his stool. I don't think Bumphus had even got his mouth guard in yet.

If memory serves me right this was the reason they introduced the 10 second warning before the bell to start each round.

White shorts, wasn't it? Because they made him look bigger. He talked about it during an interview with Frank Skinner.

Jimmy Thunder's KO record. Thunder's win over Eli 'The Prophet' Dixon was one of the most entertaining heavyweight fights I've seen. Constant swinging from both, until Eli injured himself! Heavyweight Explosion on Eurosport with Steve Holdsworth.

(One of my favourite Holdsworth quotes: 'Ooh, he should've had a handbag on the end of that. Dear me.')

That one was intentional comedy.

Not really weird, but it's a classic.

One of the worst ones ever in terms of timekeeping was when Kirklaing Laing was fighting for the European in Italy. Some rounds were about 4 minutes when the Italian was doing well, and they would just ring the bell when Laing was on top!
Paul Samuels and the fighter from Peterborough in that double knockdown.

The whole Danny Williams vs Konstantin Airich fight, but particularly the promoter ringing the bell himself halfway through round 6 to save Airlich.

Danny Williams knocking out Mark Potter with one arm

On a side note. It says something about the sport of boxing that nobody seems to think that people coming to the ring on flying carpets, through graveyards, on motorbikes etc is particulary weird.

Juan Martin Coggi vs Eder Gonzalez I, for the WBA light-welter title. I read about this in Boxing Monthly when it happened, & as soon as the Interweb became available, I looked it up, thinking "There's no way this can be as crazy as people say".

Oh, how wrong I was:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD91QpMH5no

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feS5M-Swz30

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OL-3rUpP4cU

Coggi (fighting at home in Argentina) decks Gonzalez in the second, then walks into one as he goes for the finish. Gets a fourteen second count, gets mullered with the follow-up, so the ref puts his arms around Coggi. End of the fight?

No! He holds the favourite upright. Gonzalez is up on the ropes celebrating, when the ref makes sure Coggi is upright against the ropes & tells Gonzalez the fight's still on.

Gonzalez is waiting to continue in a neutral corner (the ref still hasn't said box). Meanwhile, Coggi's manager/trainer gets up on the apron, hooks his hand into Coggi's belt & basically holds him upright against the ropes. The ref calls time in, Coggi's manager's still got hold of Coggi, who can't stand up on his own, & Gonzalez twats him with a right-hand bomb. Coggi's manager is still holding the fecker up at this point, then the ref gets between the fighters to stop Gonzalez hitting Coggi again. Gonzalez starts celebrating again, but the referee signals the end of the round, with no bell rung & thirty seconds remaining on the clock!

The next round is basically Gonzalez pasting Coggi, so they end it thirty seconds early again. In the fourth, with Coggi doing better, they only knocked fifteen seconds off the clock. Gonzalez goes out & decks Coggi again in the fifth, the ref drags him up, signals no knockdown & wipes off his gloves. Gonzalez fades, Coggi comes back into it, & Gonzalez gets stopped in the seventh.

Mind-blowing stuff. Probably some other crazy shit went down in that fight, but I can't remember. I think Coggi gets knocked down at least one more time & it gets ruled a slip, & he probably got a couple of time outs when Gonzalez was trying to finish him, but I can't remember properly. It's just too insane.

EDIT: Oh yeah. The judges had Coggi ahead at the time of the stoppage. Un-hunh.
