Heavyweight bodyshot stoppages?!
I can't for the life of me remember the last time Ive seen a heavyweight stopped due to a bodyshot. I'm sure there must be some examples and I'd love if you guys could point me in the right direction via youtube.
Thanks in advance

Good question, not many come to mind.
One of the best body shots I've ever seen was Gerry Cooney's left against Ron Lyle. The first knockdown in Tyson v Spinks was from a right hand to the ribs. Early Bruno went to the body - I can picture someone crawling around on the canvas after a big Frank dig downstairs. Tua was a good body puncher.

If I recall correctly Toney-Holyfield ended on a body shot? Can't think of any others though at the min.
Can't believe that's almost ten years, feels like it happened 6 months ago!

Yeah, i've often wondered too. You see the state of some heavyweights with their flabby guts and think they'd be ripe for going over with body shots, but they don't. Having said that you don't see many heavyweights really going to the body, full stop. Chisora for example was the first guy I can really remember having a go at Vitali's body. Maybe heavys just have glass jaws and iron bodies!

Did Holyfield stop Douglas on a bodyshot? Can't quite remember.

Ray Mercer put Don Steele through the ropes with a body shot

No, that was a counter right to the chin.
But Holyfield dropped Mercer (who'd never ever been decked before) with a left hook to the ribs that landed like a gunshot.*
Most heavies don't throw bodypunches 'cos... Well... Most of 'em can't. They lack the technique & timing to set it up properly & are mostly convinced that a good dig on the chin will end things, so tend to neglect it.
Frazier was a great bodypuncher, though, as was Tyson when he got his head on straight.
*: EDIT: I've just gone to have a look. It was, in fact, a left hook to the chin that sat Mercer down. Wow. All these years watching it on the SKY broadcast I believed Ian Darke. Just watched the Showtime version online & it smashes him right in the chin. Must be a different camera angle, sorry.

Frazier was the best heavyweight body puncher, he used to double them up with it.
Re: Heavyweight bodyshot stoppages?!
Obligatory mention of Bob Fitzsimmons
Re: Heavyweight bodyshot stoppages?!
Tyson v Tubbs
Re: Heavyweight bodyshot stoppages?!
Frank Bruno vs Larry Frazier
Jeff Lampkin vs a weight drained Glen McCrory (admittedly down at cruiser)

The only one I can immediately recall is Tyson Fury early on his professional career stopping Scott Belshaw with a real sickener of a body shot after that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0DNLFfbQQE

Toney hurt holyfield badly with a bodyshot, sure, i think around the 5th or 6th round
Holyfield loooked like he'd stop Cooper in the first with bodyshots but Cooper managed to survive the onslaught
Cooney vs Lyle a good one. he hit Holmes with a couple of murderous bodyshots too.

Always loved that left to the body Tyson threw at Michael 'Jack' Johnson. It floored him, but the right to the head that finished poor Johnson was like a steam train.

Lennox had a good go at Vitali's body too. About 5 heavy shots to Vitali's body in a row in the clinch. Didn't seem to have any effect at all.Newport Daz wrote:Yeah, i've often wondered too. Re: Heavyweight bodyshot stoppages?!
There doesn't seem that many- with such poor conditioning of some heavies it is a wonder why there isn't.
I recall Harry senior being a fairly prolific body puncher. Corrie sanders has a notable stoppage with body shots. Perhaps due to the size of participants they don't spend enough time in that close range

I seem to remember Senior stopped Sprott with body punches. Sprott had been undefeated at the time and was the last signing that Terry Lawless made.
