This is just another example of boxing shooting itself in the foot.
I agree with Jeff, Stieglitz is a paper champion and by pulling out to face him Groves has suddenly become very unpopular for a number of different reasons.
Even if he beats Stieglitz can you imagine him being good enough to face any of the top guys at SMW in his first defence?

Does anyone know if Tommy Karpency could make 168?

I wouldn't put Stieglitz in he top 10, He got knocked out by Librado Andrade.

And Berrio banged him out a couple of years earlier. He's dog shit and so is the WBO.

So? Wlad Klitschko lost by stoppage to Ross Puritty.
Sergio Martinez was stopped by Antonio Margarito.
Yoan Pablo Hernandez was smashed by a past prime Wayne Braithwaite.
Ricky Burns was floored three times by Carl Johanneson, en route to a resounding points loss.
Ryan Rhodes lost to Lee Blundell.
Matthew Macklin lost to Andrew Facey.

I could go on and on. Stieglitz is most certainly a top ten super middleweight - your post suggests you haven't bothered to watch any of his recent fights.

Furthermore the WBO is no worse than the WBC or the WBA - in fact despite it's many faults, i'd say it's better than both of those organisations.

Pulling out of a bout with Anderson to fight a much better opponent is hardly cowardly.

Plot to shoot boxer during live TV fight

BOXING champ George Groves was living in fear last night after gangsters threatened to kill him in a live TV fight. 6 comments
Police warned Groves, 23, and his fiancée Sophie following a tip-off he would be gunned down in the ring.

The British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champ cancelled tomorrow's satellite TV clash with Scot Kenny Anderson at London's Wembley Arena because of a back injury.

His management said the withdrawal was unrelated to "alleged threats".

A pal said: "George and Sophie were told by CID officers a threat had been made on his life and they should consider their safety. The intelligence said if he wasn't shot before the fight, it would happen in the ring."

Anderson had called world No12 Groves a "coward" for not fighting him.

But Groves said: "I apologise to everyone who spent money around the fight.

"I suffered a back injury sparring and haven't trained properly since."

In November 2010, Groves beat Anderson, 29, in the sixth round of a previous bout. It is not known if the rematch will happen.

In 2010, Anderson was cleared of the attempted murder with a hammer of a drug dealer when witnesses failed to turn up at court. There was no sign of Groves or Sophie at their flat in Hounslow, West London, yesterday. Police said they are not in protective custody.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm a threat to the welfare of a man was made to police in Hounslow."

Apparently someone rang up and said "I am going to physically shoot George Groves."

Seriously though, that is just mental. Hope it's typical made up rubbish.

Anderson is an intimidating bloke, no doubt about that. The rumours that he has links to some pretty scary people only serve to heighten this.

Not sure how much truth people can put into these claims about shooting in the ring etc, but something has obviously happened to scare Groves out of the fight. Most likely he knew he was looking at a pasting at the hands of Anderson.

hope kenny can stay busy as inactivity has cost him no doubts. put him in with reid as this will be an easy fight to make and a decent fight due to reids profile, kenny will win convincingly but be interesting to see if reid has anything left to offer

Disgrace. If these are the sort of people Anderson associates with and this is a way his people want to make Groves lose focus he should have his licence revoked.

He was getting KTFO and he (and his people) knew it.

Dave is a good mate of Groves', Jazzy.

Dave - agreed.

Looks like this situation is in danger of spiralling out of control. Hope everyone takes a deep breath...

Sorry about that Dave and co..... Its a joke and nothing to do with any of us. The article was terribly written and to link Anderson is an iresponsible thing to do. What a ridiculous notion.

I wonder how the sun found out? Listening to phone calls again are they. If i was Kenny i wud ring up the sun and give them an absoloute mouthful. Why oh why do they need to mention about the court case from 2010, just stirs up shit and makes fake conspiracies.

Aye, it's also potentially dangerous legally for The Sun (the juxtaposition bit) - Kenny might want to consult M'learned friends.

Because it says so in the "Sun" newspaper then it must be true

Anderson can associate with who he wants, its got nothing to do with his boxing career as long as he's not breaking the law himself.

Bringing up the "hammer" incident is very unfair in my opinion, Anderson was never convicted of that, whatever happened to "innocent until PROVEN guilty"

Who's to say the Groves camp haven't made this story up because of the stick Groves is getting for pulling out, a lot of people aren't happy about losing flight/hotel money, he's getting a lot of abuse on twitter and rightly so he's made a fool of the fans.

Groves didn't want to take a very risky defense with a world title around the corner, that's fine I don't have a problem with that, but I do have a problem with the lies and stringing along fans.
