Just finished reading Night Train, a book about Sonny Liston. Good book about a troubled man.

I finished Johnny Nelson's yesterday..only took me four days.

I've not read Night Train but I read the other Sonny Liston book, His Life, Strife and the Phantom Punch by Rob Steen...I don't recommend it. It's quite obvious from an early stage that Steen isn't even a boxing fan.

Night Train is on Amazon but you can only get used copies there too. 66p is the cheapest...with an added £2.80 for p&p

The author tries too hard......awfully hard, dense read. Just tell the story...mutherfucker.

I read it at the time, the US edition which is called 'The Devil & Sonny Liston'. I don't mind the guys lively, bar room prose but he presented too much stuff as 'fact', claiming Sonny threw both Ali fights, that Liston was 'pulling' his punches when he clearly wasn't, and he had a love of Liston and a hatred of Ali that was obvious and undermined his work.

Also, he glosses over many important fights with a throwaway one line description whilst writing about other people not central to the narrative for pages and pages. Overall worth reading, but with a pretty big pinch of salt.

The best writing I've seen on Liston and his story is his section in Remnick's brilliant 'King of the World'. Similarly, his bio on Patterson in the same book is also the best I've come across on Floyd.

I read 'Sonny Liston: His Life, Strife and the Phantom Punch' a few years back it is quite possibly the worst book ever. Rob Steen is stuffy academic and not a boxing fan that shines through on every page.

I have just started reading Nelson's book, what did you think of it?

Yeah I really enjoyed it, I didn't think it fell into the trap of other autobiographies which are mainly a chronological record of the career of the 'author'.
Nelson was quite open about his life and what he thinks of certain people and I like to see that. If you're going to tell your story you might as well tell it as it is.

There are certainly some interesting stories in there, I never realised that he was touted as a potential Mike Tyson opponent...now that would have been a spectacle!
