Someone did a good highlights compo of him knocking Mundine the eff out a few years back. Makes a lovely crack when he lands high up.

I used to watch him fight on RTL back when you could get free German and European TV on the old analog satellite boxes. Saw most of his fights. I think a lot of people make too much of the "fixes" etc and clearly haven't seen the fights. I used to watch with the commentary off as I don't speak German but if there's bias there then there's bias in Neilly's commentary for the BBC on the Reid fight.

saw a few of his defences.

tended to follow a similar pattern.

circle for a couple of minutes.

flurry combo's in the last minute and steal the rd on the judges cards.

thought reid did enough against ottke.

it was a terrible spectacle though.

good combo puncher.

classic amateur pts scorer type style.

didn't translate as well in the pro's.

cos his lack of punch meant u had to sit thru 12x3 minute rds of the boring bugger. :OhYes:

yeah, well summed up. he would spend large portions of the fight scooting back and flicking out the jab.

I remember Glen Johnson chasing him down the entire fight but not really doing much effective work. his head was literally steaming while waiting for the scorecards and it's fair to say he wasn't very pleased when he lost.

He might have looked dull, he might not have looked like he had everything going for him - however, you don't beat the fighters that he did (geniunally in most cases) without having anything.

As Starie noted when they fought, Ottke moved backwards faster than I moved forwards.... it wasn't meant as a dig, it was a compliment.

He has to go down as one of the least likely success stories in boxing history. He was inept in every single department.

Charisma? None
Excitement? Once, against Mundine.
Talent? Meh, knew how to protect himself at least
Baldness? Yes
Power? Again once against Mundine
Opponents? All damaged goods.

How in gods name did this bloke hold a world title for 6 years and routinely fill 18,000 seat stadiums?

Anyway, give us some of your examples of unlikely superstars , if you can be arsed.
I think you are being very harsh and if i may say very narrow minded. Ottke was not "one of the least likely success stories"....he was one of the last Communist era outstanding amateurs. A true amateur code man...and a distinguished world champion in that code. To than go on at a very advanced stage to turn pro and pretty much beat everyone and anyone at the weight bar Calzaghe in such a short window and retire undefeated was a very impressive achievement. People complain he won many gifts but those people probably didnt see almost all Ottkes title defences like I did and are certainly talking about fights they never saw and just repeating old wives tales on forums. Glencoffe Johnson and Charles Brewers crying wasnt quite the truth I had Ottke winning handily...equally reid hardly got robbed. He didnt do anywhere near what Macklin and Murray did against sturm which themselves were fights that could have gone either way . Ottkes win was a little better and IM one of Reids biggest fans felt he was denied against Calzaghe.

Ottke certainly had charisma to the packed houses he congregated in Germany. And also those who appreciated good boxing skills. He was a true east german folk hero. His perm and look may have been non hip hop but he didnt lack charisma.
He wasnt bald, he shaved his head. His opponents were not damaged goods, what planet are you on talking such nonsense? he beat glencoffe johnson, and he beat Brewer twice and Mitchell before Calzaghe did . He also beat an unbeaten Mundine and Branco who went on to win world titles or compete for them. He had at times his fair share of easy foes but that was cos he fought 6 times a year in title fights.

All I know is back in 1999-2002 i realy enjoyed coming home from my first real job on a Tuesday night and watching ottke fight on eurosport and listen to Steve Holdsworth commentate on them. They were also the first fights i saw in the superior digital tv signal. It was bliss being a 22-23 year old doing boxing myself to watch Ottke

I've read a couple of reports on the web saying Ottke is the biggest earning non heavyweight boxer in Germany, they say he used to get 10% of tv and tickets.

I think Ottke was the most shocked man in boxing when he stopped Mundine.

LOL yep sven's biggest weakness as a pro was his lack of power, although having said that as Steve Holdsworth used to comment, what was it about Ottke being a small man, and such a supposed non puncher, yet whenever he rushed his foes they would cover up and not fire back, and would be hesitant to go forward......Swen had enough power to keep all his foes honest.....the Mundine fight was shocking as Mundine had won every round and was boxing on his feet beautifully when a single shot put Mundine unconscious in the 9th!!!!!!

Woulda shoulda coulda though, isn't it? I'm with deadpan, FWIW. Calzaghe's career pre-Lacey was... Well, Ottke-esque in its level of opposition.

In fact, their mirroring of opponents is quite eerie, really. Brewer, Pudwill, Thornberry, Mitchell, Reid... A murderer's row, to be sure.

To be fair, while I'm no fan of Ottke, that's a great post that addresses the balance somewhat.

Yeah, i didnt read any of that, but judging by the length of it you are probably right on all counts.
