Surprised to hear that .
Re: Frank Maloney to quit
franks a credit to the sport, he has got his health to consider didnt he have a heart attack ringside and hit him really hard finding darren sutherland.
Re: Frank Maloney to quit
There must be a lot of stress on Maloney at the moment. I hope this isn't true. This is 3 years off so a lot could change by then.
Re: Frank Maloney to quit
Mr Maloney is one of the good guys of the sport.
I guess the stress and its effects are something that only he can decide on.
Best of luck to him on whatever he decides.

Re: Frank Maloney to quit
Sounds like he was put through the ringer a bit there, I wonder if there's more to this than we know.
Having said that, it's very hard to put the figure they were painting Maloney to be and the public figure together. I've always seen Maloney as decent enough and a straight talker-which isn't too common in his side of the game.

i think frank will remain true to his word, ........ watch this space.
Re: Frank Maloney to quit
It's sad to read that. I know it must be very tough for Darren's family to accept his passing, but to use Maloney as somewhat of a scapegoat seems unfair. That guy, Brennan has a lot to answer for aswell. Frank has always come across as one of the good characters in the sport and if he does decide to finish up in 2015, he will be missed. Hope he enjoys his last few years in the sport.
Re: Frank Maloney to quit
Frank is understandaly dissapointed and upset with how things are panning out regarding this matter. I don't see him quitting though.
He has always been emotional, loyal and successful. I hope he continues and I am sure he will.

From personal experience, one of the nicest, most approachable, Promoters in boxing.
Real shame.

It's sad what has been said and I feel for the guy, but if he really wanted to quit he'd just sell his boxers contracts to rival promoters.
Re: Frank Maloney to quit
You obviously do not understand boxing contracts, most top boxers lawyers would have a clause that they are unasignable or else a fighter could get sold and signed to a promoter he does not like. We are now living in the 20th century not the dark ages.

Err, from a man who does not know which century it is.dapug wrote:You obviously do not understand boxing contracts, most top boxers lawyers would have a clause that they are unasignable or else a fighter could get sold and signed to a promoter he does not like. The point is, fighters contracts CAN be traded to another promoter and HAVE been in the past. I'm not saying, like you misunderstood, that the fighter would not get a say in the deal. It hinges on them agreeing.
However, if Frank is serious about quitting he could easily broker an agreement between certain fighters and other promoters. Any boxers he couldn't pass off could be released.
A contract is not a death sentence for Frank either and if truly wants to retire he should do so. There is nothing stopping him releasing his boxers.
Anyway, best of luck to whatever he does.
Re: Frank Maloney to quit
It's hardly a threat to quit when he's said he won't be retiring for another 3 years by which time he could have made some big money off David Price.Wake up call wrote:Err, from a man who does not know which century it is.dapug wrote:You obviously do not understand boxing contracts, most top boxers lawyers would have a clause that they are unasignable or else a fighter could get sold and signed to a promoter he does not like. I kinda like Maloney although found some of his comments during his London Mayoral run to be disgraceful and he does come across as bitter towards other promoters when they've had a success trying to repackage boxing e.g Prizefighter. He's done some good things for British boxing in the past but we definately need some new young blood to promote boxing who have fresh exciting new ideas to push the sport forward.

Well PrizeFighter isn't always a successful model but it certainly was a step in right direction in terms of attracting new people to boxing.MachoMan09 wrote:New ideas like what? Give me some examples.
A bit more razzle dazzle wouldn't go a miss either.

British boxing need people like Frank Maloney. I hope he doesn't quit.
Re: Frank Maloney to quit
He's a good promoter and he has put the graft into small hall British boxing shows. For people to blame somebody else for a guy taking his own life, I'm sorry I just don't buy it. The decision to take your own life is clearly a MASSIVE decision which ultimately can only come down to the person who does it.
Suicide is a selfish act in many ways, it leaves behind a lot of victims, for people to try and scapegoat Frank for the lad's sufferings is just plain wrong. What the lad seemed to be missing was a support system and people he could really talk to and thrash out his fears and worries with, loneliness is a big killer, isolation. More so than any fear over a boxing contract.
The main problem we have in our society is that men in particular are scared to talk about their problems as they see it as a sign of weakness and not being a 'real man'. If Darren had issues, he needed to get them out in the open, not bottle them up. I repeat, you cannot blame Frank for this, the family are just looking for someone to blame.
