Carmen Basilio will be entering the New York State Boxing Hall Of Fame on April 1st. It is the first class of the newly formed NYS BHOF. Carmen should be present for the event. His wife informed the HOF that he is presently in Florida with Billy Backus for some kind of promotional appearance.
Depending on how he feels (evidently day to day health issues because of his age) and how he feels after he takes the flight home, will depend on if he comes.
He lives in Rochester, NY,another flight away from the city after the HOF event.

Mike Tyson (also an inductee) is presently in Florida too. He is working on a WWF wrestling contract that week.(I am not sure in what regard-I do not think he is wrestling on a daily basis-but if he is its only a one shot kind of promotional thing)-but hopes to make the event as well if times allows.

The 10th Annual California Boxing Hall of Fame luncheon . . .

The CBHOF will hold it's biggest event to date on October 20th, at the Sportsman's Lodge in Studio City. This year's inductees include world champions Sergio Martinez, Tony Lopez, Lucia Rijker, Rocky Marciano, Joe Frazier, Floyd Patterson, Kid Gavalin and Carl "Bobo" Olson, HBO's Jim Lampley, boxer & trainer Rudy Hernandez, world ra...ted Adrian Arreola, boxer-historian Randy De La O, knockout artist Vic "The Kid" Ponce, Calif. champ Norman Parra, heavyweight contender Charlie Norkus, James "The Heat" Kinchen, trainers Al Stankie, Burke Emory and Rudy Ayon, referee Fritz Werner, heavyweight Jimmy Rosette, light-heavyweight contender Jesse Burnette, Georgie Gonzalez and Rudy Tellez.

A great lunch is served and the best of boxing will be on hand. The CBHOF event is the only major boxing Hall of Fame event held on the West Coast and each year the luncheon is a sell out. The fight crowd turns out for this event each year, the great boxers and boxing personalities. Meet and visit with the best of boxing.

Tickets are now available and I recommend ordering early.
Tickets are $50 each, or $500 for a table (10 guests per table).
The price includes a great lunch, plus tax & tip, a collector's Souvenir journal, comfortable table seating and an unforgetable afternoon with boxing legends at a legendary Southern California event center.

For tickets you may call CBHOF President Don Fraser at: (818) 761-4887

Advertising rates for the Collector's Souvenir Journal are also available.

Tony Baltazar, Raul Bencomo and Jimmy Montoya

On March 19, 1981, on a card headline by Kiko Bejines vs Franco Torregoza at the Olympic Auditorium Tony fought Jimmy Montoya’s fighter Raul Bencomo in a scheduled six rounder. Bencomo proved to be a lot tougher than what we expected. Fight was pretty even going into the fifth round. Around mid-round Bencomo backed Tony against the ropes and in rushing-in for what he thought was the kill ran into one of Tony’s patented short left hooks, Bencomo was out before he hit the canvas. A rematch was in order.

The rematch didn’t take place till the following year, June 26, 1982 on a card headline by Frankie and Tony, also at the Olympic Auditorium. This time the fight was scheduled for ten rounds. This time it was Tony all the way. In the second round Tony hit Bencomo again with his patented left hook. Again Bencomo was out before he hit the canvas…Frankie too won by second round KO vs Abe Perez.

After the fights down in the Olympic’s catacombs (dressing rooms) Jimmy told Bencomo not to worry about losing, that he would get him another fight with Tony. Bencomo told Jimmy: “fornicate you!, you fight him, the sonofbitch is crazy, he is trying to kill me!”

Art Aragon is questioned by newsmen as he surrendered to police at Los Angeles Jan,15.1957 after being indicted by the grand jury on a felony charge. He is accused of offering Dick Goldstein a bribe to take a dive in a fight that never took place in Texas.

This is a Great Card for HOF lineup. Thank You for the great honor for my father, and I plan to be there to accept the Honor you bestow on him. The Journal itself could be a Great Collector's Issue with names like that.

Carlos Chavez Career Record/ Obit L.A. Times, - August 9/1990

The Iron Man Defeated Boxing's Best, but Not Robber's Shotgun Blast
August 09, 1990|LORI GRANGE | TIMES STAFF WRITER

They called Carlos Chavez the Iron Man, the little boxer of the 1940s and '50s who beat the likes of ring champions Manuel Ortiz, Lauro Salas and "Golden Boy" Art Aragon.

He was quiet and modest outside the ring. But inside, he let his hands do the talking. If Chavez made it past three rounds, his opponent didn't stand a chance. He was a slow starter, but he didn't go down easily, said those who knew and boxed him.

The man who last week shot and killed the Iron Man may have found that out.

Chavez, 68, died about 9 p.m. last Wednesday near his Eagle Rock home, the victim of what police believe was a robbery gone sour.

Chavez was walking home from his nightly rounds at a pizza parlor and neighborhood bar, in the 4100 block of Verdugo Road, where he typically drank water and talked to friends. On his way home he was accosted by a 28- to 30-year-old man, said Detective John Munguia of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Two witnesses told police that they saw Chavez struggling with the man. One of the witnesses called out, and the startled gunman shot Chavez once in the chest with a shotgun, Munguia said. Chavez died at the scene.

"The man was a fighter and he put up a fight," Munguia said. "He just didn't throw his hands up and give up . . . He was in very good shape. But anything physical's not going to help stop a shotgun blast."

Chavez was well-liked and well-known by neighbors and community merchants. He visited Verdugo Pizza and Tony's Place practically every night. He did not carry large sums of cash. His wallet, containing $14, was found in his pocket, Munguia said.

Police had received reports that others were involved. Now, Munguia said, police believe that the assailant acted alone. But little else is known. Witnesses offered few details about the gunman or where he fled, the detective said.

Police said they are investigating whether the same person may have been responsible for a fatal shooting in Glendale hours later. Chul Woo Nam, 50, was shot once in the chest with a shotgun. His body was found about 3 a.m. near his home on Jackson Street. Glendale police said he was not robbed.

The mystery of who killed Chavez, and why, bothers his three sons, his friends and his former opponents. The Iron Man, they said, was a gentle, quiet, retired brewery worker. He was healthy, still at his boxing weight of about 138 pounds, but walked with a limp as a result of a stroke years earlier.

"He wouldn't have allowed anyone to take his money from him," said Michael Chavez, 42, a Santa Barbara resident. "But my dad was so small. Even if he did get feisty with someone, he couldn't have done much harm. It was a brutal way to go."
