Tod Morgan Query

Post by Ric »

Did Morgan fight Saverio Turiello twice in 1936? Does one of our Aussie editors know? CBZ does not report two bouts in 1936:

Ric..I'd go with the CBZ. The Ring Record Book also has only one Morgan-Turiello fight in 1936. 02-03-1936

Wow ! The Saverio Turiello fights in Australia, , as we have them is markedly different from that in the 1943 Ring Record Book. Our Alf Blackt is undoubtedly Alf Blatch duplicated. I'll check all of these bouts in the Sydney newspapers when I am in the Library next Thursday.

Bud Ridley-Louis Garcia

Colin, would you also see if you can clarify Ridley's April 22, 1922 bout with Garcia? Apparently the 1941 RRB calls the fight a NC, but states Garcia was DQ'd in the caption under it.

Firstly the Ridley - Garcia bout was a no contest. Two contemporary newspapers report that in the 10th Garcia went down. One (the Sydney Morning Herald) reports that the ref then left the ring and declared a no contest. The second (the Daily Telegraph) gives a little bit more detail. Again it says that Garcia went down in the 10th. It adds that he appeared to be 'out' but sprung up at the count of four. The referee declared that he wasn't trying and declared it a no contest. The paper indicated that Ridley was unlucky as he appeared to be trying.

As for the Blatch - Turiello fights the results were - 13 Jan 1936 D15 (questionable decision), 9 March 1936 Blatch WTKO 10 (Turiello injured right hand and could not continue after 10th, which he won, although he was slightly ahead). 4 April 1936 Turiello LDq 11 (head butt, generally conceded to be accidental, opened a bad cut over an eye of Blatch).

Turiello W15 Tod Morgan on 3 Feb 1936.

I can find no other fights for Turiello, having checked as far as 8 Jun to this time. I have no doubts the so called Blackt bout should be deleted (these are Blatch bouts entered incorrectly). I will leave the other unconfirmed fights (vs Purcell, Flowers, Humphries) until I check another contemporary source. However I doubt they ever took place as Turiello was the star attraction in Sydney at this time and I can see no way any of his fights would not have been reported on. Even his training ssessions rated a mention !

Forgot to mention - no report of Morgan - Turiello fight on 19 February 1936. Will check this also from another contemporary source.
