He deserves a rematch at the very least but it was incredible that Shane couldn't put Enzo away only 35 seconds after nailing him.
Re: Boxing Clever - Enzo should quit but no sympathy for Shane
yes but you also said in the original subject you had NO sympathy for Shane....that just seems wrong as he was well and truly robbed, of that there is no doubt.thepocketrocket wrote:The scorecards were fair....That wasn't my point...and if you had read the rest you may have realised that I thought Shane was shafted.
Congratulations on reading the first paragraph and then feeling you know enough about the context of the piece to reply negatively

I believe there is a differance between acknowledging he was bent over like Andy Defresne and having personal sympathy.
But that is a subjective point and will understand that some may disagree

Good post as ever MachoMachoMan09 wrote:Dobbing, like every other person I have heard or read discussing the fight, acknowledges that the time keeping blunder cost Shane. But it happened. It shouldn't have happened, no, but it did happen. Rightly or wrongly, the fight continued and, from then on, Shane's conditioning was the main reason why the verdict ultimately went against him. He couldn't sustain a high enough work-rate to win the majority of the middle and later rounds. A guy summarising the fight can't simply ignore rounds 2-12 because round 1 was cut short, can he?fatcity69 wrote:Its fair enough to mention Shanes conditioning yes, but the article makes his conditioning a main reason for why he lost and furthermore a reason why he the writer and therefore we the readers should not feel sorry for him for losing the title. In this particular situation this is totally unfair and really raises some questions as to the writers motives for angling his story in this manner. Im sure theres certain people who are overjoyed at the fact that here we are musing the ins and outs of shanes digestive system rather than questioning what actually happend during that fight. How many people have even remarked that the points decision in itself was unjust???... not many.MachoMan09 wrote: Why can't he do both?
We could talk all day about fighters conditioning, the majority of fighters drink inbetween fights, in fact many drink and party heavily between fights, this is a fact of life. Indeed many fighters party and drink during training, so really to single shane out as deserving his fate due to his not living his life like a monk even when not in training seems extremely harsh and rather niave to me.
McPhilbin was the subject of the article, he is the newsworthy fighter (this week). So he's only being singled out in the same way Wayne Rooney is singled out when he scores a hat-trick, or when he has a shocker.
I take on board what you are saying about whether Shane's inability to keep the tempo up for 12 rounds is justification enough for us not to feel sympathy for him. Personally I think he was badly done to and the fight should have been declared a no contest. But I do feel that he only has himself to blame that he was blowing from round four onwards.

So the board has ordered an instant rematch and suspended the timekeeper, who apparently was in breach of regulations. Anyone know what ones? Not at work, can't check.

Re: Boxing Clever - Enzo should quit but no sympathy for Shane
x 2 particularly the bit that I have bolded.... we will never know what would have happend had the fight had the extra 47 seconds. I think this might be the only such time (possibly Bute vs Andrade 1 is another) when there is a distinct difference in the terms "Boxer A was robbed/shafted" and "Boxer A deserved to win".King Geedorah wrote:Nice read. I think Shane wanted to do it, his mind was willing, his body wasn’t up to it beyond the 3-4 and a piece on ineptitude cost him what would most likely have been a first round KO, although I’ve seen very rare cases of fighters who went down like they’d been shot only to see it out. Given Enzo’s recent record survival was unlikely, but never say never. We’re all speculating on what happened next with certainty when the only certainty is that we will never know 100%.
Bear in mind that this is McPhilbin’s third fight at the championship limit, one went long and was his first big title so he probably ran on emotions and adrenaline in that one, one went short, Enzo got out of the first and it became a bit of a maul, no wonder Enzo, with his experience of course and distance, lasted it better and McPhilbin blew a gasket.
It happens all through the levels, look at Angulo against Kirkland, and you can see why McPhilbin went for broke, gassed and faded. No matter how hard you train there’s a knack to doing that 12 round distance, especially when your opponent, although past his prime, is a step up.
The time keeper was incompetent. We can talk about the many occasions when his ding went dong when it was supposed to, but he made a huge error, impacted on the fight due to ineptitude and needs to be carpeted and then given the necessary training, including what to do if your tools fail you, and crack on. I can offer him expert tuition, my ding never fails to dong when I’m ringing that bell and I go off right on time 92% of the time…with only 20-seconds rest between goes an’ all.
Shava!
We will never know how Enzo would have reacted.... was he as hurt as he was against Fenkel, against Haye etc -no.... he had the wereabout and the experience to take a knee to buy some time. He didn't against Fenkel and Haye. The natural concern was off course, he needed to take a knee which showed how hurt he was.
On the Flip side of Enzo being given a massive massive lifeline with the incompentent time keeper, was that he was only given 35 odd seconds recovery between the "rounds" yet managed to survive (barely) the next couple..... Now, I'm not suggesting that this definately signifies that Enzo would have survived the next onslaught immediately after having his brain shaking and on rubber legs. However, I also think its a bit extreme to categorically (as fact) to say he won't and that McPhilpin deserved to win. He was robbed of the chance of winning, yes - but it wasn't guarenteed.
Yes, Enzo should retire.... or at the least stick to Light Heavyweight. He looked stupidly built and looked shot before the KD. But he did nothing wrong here, and somehow found a way to win.

Well said. Journalists cannot form objective opinions if they are financially linked to parties involved in the subject matter. It renders whatever they say pretty meaningless, for me. I haven't exactly trawled the internet looking for objective opinions of what happened during the Maccarinelli v McPhilbin first round - I don't need to, I can see what happened and form my own.oliverc wrote:I am tired by the BBB of C's refusal to deal with serial incompetence, I am tired with poor officiating (which almost always exclusively benefiting the home fighter), I am tired of the promoter who can not be named, I am tired of a particular personality who purports to be a plain speaking messiah but is little more than a dimwitted cockney loudmouth, I am tired of apologists and company men
It's interesting that the BBC don't even mention it in their poxy little piece on the fight. Why? It was certainly the most interesting thing that happened. Shame on the BBC. Or whoever is supplying the BBC with their news. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/boxing/17495987
Also, when certain 'journalists' use their 'i know all about boxing, trust me' spiel to try and guide reader opinion rather than present the facts, it's particularly insulting. A decent journalist would have got their stopwatch out, and timed the fkin round themselves to try and explain what happened, rather than just look at the TV channel's clock (which was all over the place).
The first round was 2.18 in when the bell is first sounded. The bell was rung again 5.5 seconds after that.
The break was 42 seconds long from the first bell. That makes 3 minutes, and presumably that's why most people went with the 'no conspiracy theory' theory. Which is opinion, not fact.
To quote Bunce in an article for the 'independent':
"I have to say that, from my ringside seat, the man in charge of the bell looked a bit shell-shocked and that can happen to people at big fights in small venues when it seems that everybody is screaming down your ear"
Who did it 'seem' was screaming down the timekeepers ear then?
To stop the first round at 2.18, straight after Maccarinelli had risen gingerly from a count, and has no chance of lasting another 42 seconds, looks very suspect indeed. Not saying it is, I'm saying that's how it looks to me. Regardless of the short break.

Mr Fallons integrity is beyond reproach in the 4.5 years hes been timekeeping. Unfortunately his competence wasnt on this particular evening. I know Martin personally as i do many other officials/boxers up and down the country. Take it from me it was just a very bad day at the office.

Goodwin does him on points. Close fight, quite interesting, both coming off the back of a loss, but Goodwin's was arguably his best performance.thepocketrocket wrote:What does everyone think of Chris Goodwin v Truscott at lightweight?
