Ive no idea who these are , ive heard of willie pep before but certainly dont recall seeing any of them fight .
Maybe its my age , they are maybe from too long ago for me to really know them , im not exactly a boxing historian .
But obviously black boxers i can just reel them off the top of my head .
also to be clear can mods keep an eye on this thread in case of any idiots making un needed comments .
Sir, you have no right starting this thread.
OMG, I'm dumbfounded...
Hows that work then ?????
do i have an obilgation as a boxing fan to trawl through old fight clips to be classed as a fan .
I asked the question because i didnt know , if i knew all these guys i wouldnt have needed to start a thread about it .
willie pep - career ended in 1966
Harry greb - career finished in 1926
Jim Jeffries - theres several listed on boxrec , none look to have the most fantastic record but the best record is a heavyweigh with a 19 wins 1 loss 2 draws record - and his career ended in 1910
in my view its perfectly acceptable for someone who didnt start watching boxing til the early 90s to not know who they are , and especially as i was only 10 or 11 when i started watching , I started watching due to Mike Tyson only a couple of fights before he was sent to jail .
Watch ''the rise and fall of Jack Johnson'' if you want to know about James Jefferies
Harry Greb has the best record EVER bar none!
Calzaghe the best super middle of all time!
My Top 10, 5 would be in top 10 of anyone!
1. Harry Greb
2. Willie Pep
3. Joe Calzaghe
4. Benny Leonard
5. Mickey Walker
6. Rocky Marciano
7. Carmen Basilio
8. Gene Tunney
9. Brian Mitchell
10. Gene Fullmer
Never ever seen anything on him but I have been told peer less Jimmy driscoll was a hell of a fighter also calzaghe and how about Mickey ward for his heart and determination

Come on it isn't idiotic and I don't think it really would be controversial if it was a discussion about other races.
The thread is not racist in anyway, shape or form.
There's an age old debate about blacks being generally better adapted to certain sports than whites, but it never really gets discussed properly as nobody wants to be tarred a racist. Running is the best example, you have to go back to 1980 to find the last white man to win the Olympic 100m final (note: that Olympics was boycotted by the USA and about 50 other countries!), and Kenyan's absolutely dominate the distance events, yet whites compete in equal numbers.

An entrepreneur saw a niche and capitalised on it.
Or...
That Miss America was closed off from black women and thus they created their own competition.
Just like the 'white heavyweight championship' of the world was created when Jack Johnson reigned - not because white fighters were banned from fighting for the title but because there wasn't a white heavyweight at the time having a chance of beating him.

Tomatoes Tomatoes.
Without doing a web search, how many contestants who have ever participated in Miss America or Miss Black America can people name? I can name one and I bet it's the same one as everyone else.
This thread isn't well thought out. Is 'white' all non-blacks. Or do you mean europeans? Do the Hispanics count as white, because they sure as hell aint black....?

I can't name any?
Really? Or have I got my contests muddled up?
No - maybe if I put on my 'village people' CD, that might jog the memory!

'Hispanic' is more of a cultural concept based on language rather than race. Gabriel Batistuta, Felix Trinidad and Julio Cesar Chavez would all be classed as 'Hispanic' in America but are obviously all different racially.

Harder to define what 'white' means than you might think. According to wikipedia Tsyzu is part Russian, part Korean, part Mongol, don't know if he considers himself white or not.
Fair point , but was struggling for 3rd position .
There are loads who would be in with a shout especially in the pre war era. Micky Walker, Harry Greb, Gene Tunney, Benny Leonard, Tony Canzoneri, Barney Ross
How you can mention the last three and not Jimmy McLarnin is beyond me.

Jimy McLarnin had same fantastic scalps but generally held a good weight/size advantage over them. The book, 'Cinderella in Hollywood' is fantastic reading. It shows McLarnin as a very likable and fortunate man and also makes it clear that he was the box office draw and his manager; Pops Foster, made many suffer at the scales for their payday. McLarnin was an excelent champ but not one of the very best in my mind.

Canelo is pretty white for a Mexican too.....
And there is the red hair as well. But I think that is all down to the fact he is reported to have Irish ancestry on his mother's side of the family as his mother's surname is Barrigan which is a Spanish spelling of a common Irish surname however where it is true or not I am not sure but that is the legend I have heard.
As for White fighters the ones that jump out for me are.
