Ch5 to ditch Europa football and invest in boxing

Post by whiskey »

Yup,

Fantastic news for fans and especially for Hennessy sports indeed. If what I hear is true.

Al Bernstein is great presenter, not sure about the other fella - but hopefully will go from strength to strength.

Great news and a sensible move. The teams playing in the UEFA cup can hardly be arsed to win so they should they bother showing it!

Does this mean they'll be talking to other promoters, or are things seriously looking up for Mr Hennessy?

Al Bernstein is excellent. Have to say I have enjoyed the Channel 5 coverage.

:TU: Great, if it's true they are investing in boxing the more exposure the better. I hope they've got someone experienced at the helm keeping an eye on the product the promoters come up with though.

Agreed. Best around at the mo. Al Bernstein, far and away, obliterates all the others on SKY and BN.

I heard they had over million viewers for europa league not involving a British team game so I doubt this is true.

If Five are serious about ramping up their boxing coverage, they'll need to bring on board more promoters and can't afford to rely on Hennessy's paper-thin stable. Both Fury and Galahad could realistically be exposed inside the next 12 months, and the jury is very much out on Eubank Jr, too. Providing they don't place all of their eggs in Hennessy's basket this could be a good thing.

Hard Knocks would provide just the type of entertainment CH5 need.

I want to believe this as much as everyone else but will wait till someone goes on the record till I get excited.

From the article:

"Our insider tells us 5 believe boxing has a much better reach to young male viewers than football"

Does anyone believe this is true? Every other article I've read on the subject over the last few years has told me about how the audience for boxing is getting older. When I watch Friday Night Fights on ESPN, I'm bombarded with sponsorship from Just For Men. It may be cheaper, but does anyone believe that a TV exec really thinks that boxing is a better to reach young male viewers than showing Liverpool games?

Martin Kelner once described John Barnes' reading of autocue as: "similar to a hostage reading a prepared statement on Al Jazeera TV"

No, I don't disagree Tel. I looked down his last bill and was surprised to see some seemingly classical under-card face-offs. However, I pluck him out as a good salesman, capable of flogging a fight and without a TV deal - Primetime not withstanding.

With a little more budget.....

Ii would prefer Dave Coldwell to get a tv deal on 5 rather then Spencer because he is building up a good little stable at the moment and is willing to take risks ie bidding for Bellew-McKintosh.The one Hard Knocks show i saw on Premier before i ditched it had Spencer droning on like an evangelical preacher about 50-50 fights only to see Choi knock out some no hoper in a couple of rounds. However i wouldn`t mind spencer getting a chance at some stage,i just feel if it become a choice between the two promoters would prefer it to be Dave Coldwell.

Of course, Coldwell. Another very, very viable option with stronger stable.
