The open class was exciting as usual.
201+: Defending champ Cameron Glenn, MGGA vs Carnell Porter-Guiles, Big Dog. Glenn scored three 8-counts in the 2nd round with the 3rd one being a big knockdown which prompted the ref to immediately call a halt to the action. RSC-2 (2:12)
201: Defending 6 time state champ Jordan Shimmell, MGGA vs Sardius Simmons, FWC. Jordan faced a tough challenger who took a lot of punishment and kept fighting back. Simmons had a bloody mouth during the first round and maybe a little from his nose. The 2nd round saw a lot of blood from his mouth and nose. He also was seen spitting blood in between rounds. The 3rd round saw Sardius continue to bleed and take devastating body punches. He fought back and during the in-fighting Jordan suffered a tiny cut under his eye. Jordan proceeded to give Sardius an 8-count for his trouble and then stopped him near the end of the bout. RSC-3 (2:56). Jordan now has set the record in Michigan for the most open-class titles with 7 state titles. He also set the record for the most titles in a row with 7.
178: Christian Thomas, MGGA vs Adam Rossow, Big Dog. Thomas, the 2010 champ was facing Rossow, the 2011 champ. Christian showed who was boss by boxing from the outside and controlling the action and then when he wanted to going to the inside and outpunching Adam on the inside. Christian controlled the bout throughout all three rounds and came away with a clear 5-0 decision.
165: Niall Shimmell, MGGA vs Jonathon Scroggins, FWC. Shimmell, the 2010 champ was facing Scroggins who had just defeated the 2011 champ in the sem-finals who Niall had also defeated in the West MI finals. Niall had a tough bout on his hands and the two took turns controlling the action. At times the two would be firing away at each other in bursts of action that had the crowd cheering loudly. In the end, Niall lost a close 4-1 split decision but Niall showed great heart during the bout and great sportsmanship afterwards.
152: Ali Dixon, Benton Harbor vs Ardreal Holmes, FWC. Both boxers were looking for their first state title with the young 17 year old Holmes using his huge height and reach advantage to his fullest. Dixon just could not figure out how to nullify those advantages and Holmes won a convincing 5-0 decision.
141: Javonn "pinkie" Barnes, Trigger vs. Ricardo Rios, Sand Lake. Barnes was facing Rios in a rematch of the West MI finals and this time Barnes decided he did not want to go three rounds and just pounded on Rios. Barnes landed some hard punches and hurt Rios repeatedly in the 1st round. Rios' corner retired their boxer during the rest interval prior to the start of the 2nd round which was a smart move to save the boxer from anymore unnecessary punishment.
132: Vincent Jennings, MLK vs. Lawrence King, ABAA. Jennings took control of this bout early and never looked back. There was never a question about who was winning the bout but a determined King was able to finish the bout. The judges justly awarded Vince a unanimous 5-0 decision.

Re: 2012 Michigan Golden Gloves State Championships
Dennis, do you have the results from the Detroit Golden Gloves? The lack of media attention for this year's tournament is just sad.

I know Jordan & Javonn have a wealth of experience/potential & have a shot at Nationals. Any other guys to watch who could make a run, with or without a promising draw, in your opinion?
