Boxrec and the wider picture

Boxer,Promoter,Trainer,Manager so his opinion probly holds a touch more weight than a guy who watches from the sidelines.

I value that people have opinions and sometimes good opinions that hold a lot of weight but surely some one who is involved day in day out and behind the scenes will know a little bit more.

If you went the doctors and told him to listen to you on yr diagnosis because you hadnt missed an episode of casualty or told Gordon Ramsey how to bake a cake because you hadnt missed an episode of hells kitchen you would sound a bit crazy.

Someone on the sidelines has no vested interest though. If it was to the benefit of my doctor to push certain pharmaceuticals and I knew about it, then perhaps I would second guess his opinion if it was that I needed said medicine. Boxers, promoters, trainers and managers all have to look out for themselves, and if that means not always being open and honest on an internet forum then so be it.

To comment on Damian's first post. I think when you use your own name on a forum (as do I) and people realise who you are and that you (not me) are a respected member of a boxing community they worry slightly more about what you have to say. not that I would moderate or refine any of your posts.

I have in the past had numerous Pm's, emails, phone calls and threats over my opinion posted on certian boxing forums. Twice I went back to the post and read it again and to me it was fine, so I called the manager of the boxer in question up and asked what his problem was. He told me that he didnt appreciate me saying that his boxer could have gone further with a different team and structure. I asked him than had he read the 3 pages of the forum topic; titled "His boxer name". He said "No, I googled his name and found this shite youd posted!". I asked him to go back and read the whole thing, which he did over the next week or so. I then got a text message back saying "Sorry, I realise now you werent being crictical".

Its a tough one, for some out there that only google names etc and only read part of the topic they can jumop the gun a bit. In my case the boxer could have done better had he signed with a bigger promoter and manager and had a better qualified team behind him, but hey so could 90% of the boxers out there.

Change nothing and keeping posting as "you" see it Damian.

Opinions are like arseholes, everybodys got one and they dont always like the next persons.

The whole forum thing has changed a lot since the birth of things like Facebook and twitter. when i first started using Boxing Forums it was fans talking boxing with the odd fighter here and there with depending on the forum normally a good level of debate. However, these days the whole forum thing seems to have been hijacked by a large number of posters who come online with an agenda. I find a lot of these so called posters hiding behind fake names (sometime several) use the forums as a place to bad mouth rivals, promote fighters, spread rumors and generally stir $hit up and for these reasons I don't post much any more.

For My money Damien comes across as your bog standard hardcore boxing fan who has an educated opinion which I have never had a problem with. Unfortunately he is one of a dying bread and because he has ambitions to do something within the industry leaves himself open to abuse due to using his real name.

i have come across something similar myself but not to damiens level and its put me off pursuing a career in boxing as i fell out with someone because he didnt think my posts gave him enough respect and took things the wrong way and i dont want have a scene somewhere

I think an armchair fan/critic can 'say' more than someone who makes/hopes to make money from the sport. If you're voicing opinions about someone you are hoping to colaborate/make money with; particularly if you've not raised he issue in private then there are bound to be upset feelings.

There're some outrageous things written on here from time to time. Many of the more moderate are from 'people within the industry'. Lots of the more insulting are from armchair critics who do not need the relationships within boxing to make a living.

The moderators are between a rock a hard place with it really. Ive seen some very illuminating posts and some (and made some) that are just worse than silly.

On a 'fans forum' as a participant within the sport/industry would maybe be better with a screen name.
