Asian Olympic Qualifier

Post by mike222 »

This starts tomorrow in Astana Kazakhstan with 25 places available for London 2012.This includes a couple of spots transferred from Europe but excludes any invitational places.
It is cutthroat at lightfly, lightweight heavy and super-heavy when only the winner will advance to the games. This will be tough at the lowest weight where Asia dominate and good boxers will miss out.

What do you mean by "transfered from Europe"? compared to 2008?

One day they will use proper seeding for all major championships and use a satisfactory allocation of places in the Olympics.Oceania and Africa get way too many spots.

The Asian side is where my knowledge of amateur boxing stops, but if you have the time and are so inclined, I'd a appreciate a quick summary of who was helped and who was shafted by the draw.

The new qualification system is really weird. It has no hope of really identifying the best boxers for the Games. Which is sad, since I thought the 2004 and 2008 systems did a fine job of letting the cream rise to the top.

As an example of the crazy non-seeded draw,Nyambayar,Suranjoy Singh and Saludar would be the three top flys yet only one will qualify.

Qiang is still there for the only 60 spot but at 52 only got two of the qualifiers, Nyambayar must be a serious Olympic Challenger though.

Nyambayar is a difficult boxer to assess,he won a world senior silver medal and then for two years couldnt win a fight against anyone.Seems back to his best though and will be a threat in London.
