tony galento.
how did a short overweight guy that looked ages older then he was, make his way to the top of the heavyweight division at a time when guys such as joe louis and max baer were hanging around... how good was he?
I think someone else posted this just a few days ago but Ill answer again anyway. Galento wasnt just some short, fat guy. He had been the New Jersey amateur middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight champ. He was also very competetive with the best in the HW division during that era. His durability, left hook, and love of fighting carried him a lot farther than most guys can get with pure talent. Gene Tunney called him the most durable fighter hed ever seen and stated that when he fought Joe Louis he was one punch away from the championship, which is pretty accurate.

Good post, klompton. Galento contributed to his "fat slob" image by regularly being photographed drinking beer and eating hotdogs, and giving the impression that he trained in the saloon if at all. I recall an article by Jim Murray years ago in which he implied that this was nort an accurate representation of what Two Ton Tony was all about. He beat some good boxers and floored Louis and that's a lot more than the average lucky bum with a left hook could ever get done.
