Mike Perez - Any news?

Post by black panther »

Any news of Mike Perez? All been a bit quiet since he won Prize fighter in exciting fashion: only two low key fights against journeymen since then. Don't think he's the second coming by any means but he is fun to watch: fights against Chisora, fURY etc would bring some buzz to the domestic scene.

Very fun to watch and should make some noise on this barren heavyweight landscape, the absolute worst ever.

I just wish he would lose weight - he seems to be yet another heavyweight thinking coming in overly heavy will make him 'stronger' when he'd be better suited to be light and fit and outspeed and out finesse these immobile 17 stone monoliths.

Agreed, I thought he looked too heavy in Prizefighter at 230lbs nevermind the 247lbs he was in his fight against Page :o

220lbs-225lbs is probably his optimum fighting weight. What is it with these Cubans once they turn pro? Perhaps the super strict regime of the Cuban amateur system means when they finally get some freedom, they have no control.

He used to be with Gary Hyde. I believe he is now managed/promoted by Patrick Thomas (Cork businessman) and Brian Peters.

I know Luis Garcia has done some sort of deal with Dibella I think. He was on the Jermain Taylor undercard earlier this year.

Is Perez not with Eddie Hearn after the prizefighter?

I thought i heard Hearn complain that its hard to land fights for Perez.

Being Cuban and actually decent, he brings no domestic or European titles to the table. So domestic fights are a no-go.

Nobody would be crazy enough to take him as a mandatory either, its high risk, little reward.

Its a shame, I think he would pulverise Fury but Fury is quite right to stay well away.

You do get the feeling that the Cuban heavies are hard work for any manager or promoter, they do seem to like the good life away from boxing

Christ, Mickey Duff would import name American heavyweights for Frank Bruno and Gary Mason on a regular basis, thus gaining them widespread media attention, fan interest across the pond and world rankings, without needing to worry about domestic heavyweights or a route to the European title.

Would it really be so hard to have Mike Perez fighting once a month, alternating between the usual European punchbags and imports like Monte Barrett, Michael Grant, Maurice Harris, Fres Oquendo, Ray Austin, Cedric Boswell?

Would it really be that hard for Team Perez?

Can anybody explain to me why British promoters have lost the Duff art of building up a name heavyweight? Was it allegedly's safer route of fighting nobody of note whatsoever then bagging a WBU/WBO title fight? Who has ruined our entertainment?
