special thanx to boxrec "boxers of the past"

Post by BrocktonBlockbuster49 »

as i read some of these posts for the first time 2 months ago, i was intrigued at all the boxing knowledge on this forum compared to other forums and i made a screen name thinking i would finally get to debate and talk some serious boxing .

well i have to admit i have learned more in these past 2 months on this forum than i have in years, especially on older fighters and lighterweights. and i felt like i became more open and more neutral on some issues and learn to see others views too. all this will only help me when i pursue my goal of either being a boxing historian or a boxing writers for the the RING or another major boxing magazine.

I am 18 and barely anyone in my school or any kid i knew followed boxing, and the ones that did had no where near the level of knowledge to have a discussion. and i have not found one kid near my age that i have met that can have a legit boxing convo with me, because hardly any kid follows boxing history and the ones that too dont know what their talking about or are too biased.

well im glad i found this, and there are lot of knowledgeable guys here young and old and it feels good to be able to talk about facts and rare stories of boxing a lot of fans dont know about.

so as i go off to college in two days, i will continue to post on here, probably not as much but ill get in my posts. but i want to say im glad i found boxrec, and thanx for welcoming me in when i was hott head 8) and thanx for continueing to answer my questions and having great boxing debates with me. and i have learned to respect all opinions, and some people i didnt ge talong with at first i now look up to them and respect them emmensily.

but i thought id make this thread to thank all members of boxers of past and i will continue to be here for years to come (i hope)

well said. i joined about 2months ago myself, in basically the same boat. im recently turned 17 (august 4) and noone in my high school ever talks boxing. for the past fewyears i would go to the jamesjbraddock website, and i sent in a few statements and questions, and i have talked to some of the braddock relatives several times. including howard his last remaining son. i know i annoy people here with my braddock braddock braddock mind set, but i do it onkly because if it were not for me i doubt anyone here would mention his name. i try to keep the annoying factor to a minimum but i hope u guys dont mind, i guess u can say that im jim braddocks modern day boxrec.com joe gould. well if anyone here is interested u can go to his website.. http://www.jamesjbraddock.com great site..and if ur interested in some books just let me know. well i too want to thank everyone for answering my topics, however random theymay be, i got in some heat latley for leaving out ali in the most popular topic, i just thought it would make it interesting to have cassius but not ali. oh well we all f up.

i feel old

Post by robert.snell1 »

Well that makes me feel old guys thanks a lot. However I must say i have read with some interest the things you have posted and the sheer volume in the short period has at times been quite amusing.

I am sure that people will appreciate what you have said and wish you both well in your studies etc and trust you will continue to join in the various debates on the forum.

As you say the wide range of knowledge available on the site is substantial and aside from the odd occasion is well presented.

BB---I've watched you grow intellectually about boxing during that last few months and I certainly like your energy and your want to learn. I've went through 20 years without anyone that lives close that follows boxing, but last year I found another die-hard fan that lives pretty close by. The internet has been the biggest blessing for me when it pertains to boxing and boxing history because it has given me the ability to get to know and share research with some of the best historians in the world. Boxrec has been a tremendous asset to boxing history as relative new fans can go through and scan the records of so many boxers of the past from all over the world and now that a lot of old newspapers are starting to add their archives online...it really gives the new blood a lot of sources to research. A couple of my other favorite sites that give a lot of information about boxing history is of course:

The Cyber Boxing Zone---which has some of the top historians.
http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/

Antiquities of the Prize Ring---Harry not only sells the memorabilia, but also makes sure that there is historical information about the items...a great historical reference place.
http://www.antekprizering.com/

JO Sports---Another memorabilia site owned by Craig Hamilton...just an awesome site to learn.
http://www.josportsinc.com/

Plus there are several other sites that are very good which promote boxing history.

I was amazed to hear that you're so young....based on your knowledge of the 50s amd 60s fighters I guessed you grew up watching those guys! Mind you, when I was your age (in the early 60s) i knew a lot about the fighters from the 1930s and 40s, so maybe I should'nt be so surprised! Well done....and keep posting

If you haven't done so already Brockton I reccomend you check out the Brooklyn Eagle archive... where you can access reports on fighters such as Sullivan, Corbett, Mccoy, Griffo, Dixon... it really is amazing as many of the articles give rounds by rounds analysis so you are really able to picture in your head how these men fought!... 8) :TU: :box:

Well I'm so old I fart dust but I more than make up for it in immaturity.
I expect to become an adult sometime in my 70's I suppose. (not that far into the future) But I have been impressed with your knowledge and voluminous contributions.

As I have stated I have no flair for mechanics or the descriptions thereof so I am relegated to humor and or to color commentary. Boxing's role in the United States, England, Mexico and the world's history also fascinates me.

I for one am happy to see an enthusiastic contributor whether I am in agreement or not.

In fact disagreement suits me fine.

I KNEW you were a kid!!!! :TU:

JK, you are very well spoken and mature. Willing to taking in the other guys opinions too, which is good and will help out when finding out more about the past fighters.

Brockton ... good post. I'm sure there are folks who appreciated that. I think you and I came on board right about the same time. And, like you, I haven't found any other forum that satisfies my interest in boxing better than here.

By the way, I PM'd you one time and you never responded. No need. You're too young for me to buy you a beer, anyway, but I get up in your neck of the woods every now and then for work. Figured we could take up one of these Marciano discussions live (always a good topic).

That's it. Just echoing a few others. Haven't always agreed with some of your posts, but it's always clear where you're coming from. That's way better than the blanket statements that come out of some of these people without a shred of follow up to back what they're saying.

Good luck in school !!
