Something about the aesthetics of the 20's through to the late 50's that was just perfect. The simple three runged ring, clear canvas, devoid of crass advertising slogans, the colour and proportions of the silk shorts, black or brown gloves all set in wooden strewn outdoor arenas or ball parks or characterful halls where devoted fans in multitudes would avidly devour the action which was undiluted by ubiquitous TV coverage. Whole neighbourhoods getting together throughout the country just to listen to a fight on the radio.
Extra trains having to be put on for the demand. Eight weights, eight champions. The importance and complete significance of it all.
Having said all that,

, the depth of talent throughout the weights during the 70's and 80's was remarkable. The names on the fight CVs of most of those guys was were just like Boxing Hall of Fame lists.
