Bunce super annoying

Post by tobyh5 »

Hi guys. I was a hardcore fan for 25 years. Purchased every book, old and new that I could find and every month would get The Ring, Boxing Monthly, Boxing (year), Boxing Illustrated, World Boxing, Boxing News etc, record every single fight when they were on ITV/BBC starting in 1985 and library index them.
Boxed amateur myself on and off for 15 years.

However, fallen out of love with it and now to be honest, hardly buy a magazine, watch about one in five Friday Fight Night shows, subscibe but hardly watch allegedly, have not watched Ringside in ages and blimey, I use to watch Question of Sport up to a couple years ago just in case a boxer was on it and we had a boxing question!

Watched the Degale show on Saturday and that will be the last show I watch on that channel. What the hell is with Bunce? He puts me right off as he blusters and buffons his way through a show. Gaffawing about his shirt and a night out on the piss and as for that sidekick, Steve Lillis was it!? Another joke. I am sure they may be nice guys and love the sport but they cannot carry a show.

Not only that, but they talk utter bollox. They kept going on and on and on about Huck and how he will have ruined his career by going to heavy and now moving back down to Cruiser. Talked of how Roy Jones destroyed his body doing it as have others. How Huck will have to shed two or three stones (that was said over and over again)

IDIOTS! Huck weighed in at 209lb in the heavyweight fight. All it means is that he did not go to the super dark diet place in the last ten days before a fight which I hardly call ruining a body. 9lb is not two or three stone!!!! Twats

Yep, had to turn off after 10 seconds. Bunce is like a incredibly annoying drunken uncle at a wedding, regaling everyone with his hilarious tales. Great in a pub, but not a sports studio.

Mighty Warrier, that is exactly it. A drunken uncle at a wedding.

It was the Huck thing that peed me off. On and on and on they went about the 2 or 3 stone when it is a mere 9lb to shave off which is a piece of cake with a slight diet change in the last ten days.

I find him entertaining enough for his boxing hour, but any more than that and he becomes a chore. They need a proper guy that can present along with Bunce for these long shows. There's also no point of having an ex-pro/pro on the show if he's never got a chance to get a word in with Bunce and Lillis just talking over anything he says.

There are dozens of guys on here with more knowledge and who can probably present better...

Terry Dooley, Ian McNeilly and David Payne for starters (if we can keep the three of them sober and clean them up a bit)

I was watching Boxing Hour the other day and my Mrs demanded that I turn it over, as she couldn't stand his squeaky voice any more.

my mrs can't stand him, but i quite like the blokey feel to the whole thing. Granted, it can be a bit long winded, and buncey does like to have his say, but all in all, it could be a lot worse i.e. no channel.

I think a good thing would be to have Andy Kerr as anchor, and bunce and lillis playing off him, with a special boxer guest as an extra pundit in the studio

My missus can happily watch Bunce and finds him pretty entertaining, on the other hand she finds Adam Smith creepy as hell. Can't disagree really.........

I withdraw from the selection process immediately.

Dooley would be too hardcore, talking about minutiae as if it was common knowledge when only 1% of the viewers would have a clue. I love him for this, of course.

David would be a good choice - he's certainly never met a camera he didn't like. 8)

If we could pin a mirror to the camera he'd do it... no doubt.

I'll make some calls.

"An hour of Payne"
"This is Payneful"
"Payne that tune"

The list is endless (and gets worse!)

This is an outrage. You make me sound like some soulless jock. And everyone knows, I got soul.

Come on we can all agree the show would need to be called "Know Payne".

In fairness to Steve, I think he was on a bit of an adrenaline high from making it to the studio with 4 seconds to spare. John Keane was his runner.

I like the fact its not starchy, I like Bunce rebelling against the conformist, but it does need someone to glue it together and to offer something for Buncey to rebel against.

Even Bobby Ball needed Tommy Cannon.

And I love Lillis because he's just a good guy who's pounded the beat and knows his onions. I defy anyone to truly KNOW every left field Serbian or German on these undercards.

And finally, Buncey delivers his boxing hour, live, to camera, with no VT, no anchor, no script and has to drive the whole thing.

Hancock was marvelled at for that.

You can tell...

Hancock was a genius, and less of a ham

"Know Payne" is genius. Channel 5 may take this on, or ITV4

I think the problem is more to do with the quality of the shows than the presenters. I personally don't listen to Bunce or i half switch off because he never tells me anything that i'm not already aware of. The allegedly channel and also the Channel five show come off as quite naff in my opinion and if you think that Bunce is annoying, i feel that same about the ring announcer on channel five with his "Tiiiiiiyson a....fewuuuuuuuuuurieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" introductions  I used to quite like Bunce when he was on setanta but since he has moved to a different channel his opinions have altered to suit his new employees and i didn't like the way he treat our Ian. I just ignore him most of the time, like a fly buzzing around at a picnic, annoying but he doesn't affect your enjoyment too much.

That's the crux. you have to balance delivering to a knowledgable audience and still appeal to the die hards. I can only speak for myself, but I could not do what Bunce does in a million years.

I've been helping a friend with video interviews, it is not easy by any stretch of the imagination.
Maybe he'd get respect if he was a little more humble

And people are placing far too much on his enthusiasm. He is getting paid after all, he's not doing this for free.

He has confidence and there is a place for him on TV delivering programmes on boxing, but not at the forefront. He should be alongside someone slick with boxing knowledge and a firm hand.

There must be someone out there?

I just thought you'd broken into lyrics in your previous post.

Suffice to say. I'd love to be do it. But like my more esteemed colleagues, I believe it may prove a good deal harder than it looks.

MachoMan09 wrote:(Apologies advance for taking this into the gutter)

If you compare US pornography to British pornography you get two very different means that both result in the same end. Max Kellerman is US porn to Steve Bunce's British porn. Slick, high-budget, well-edited, clean and decontaminated versus Coarse, low-budget, improvised grot. I'll crack one out to either depending on my mood.

Agree with this. I think Lillis and Bunce are a great pairing, they have very good chemistry and unlike the thread starter I thought they were very entertaining on Saturday night. Lillis and Bunce will get better, they having a good bit of banter on the show and you can see Lillis has settled more into the TV lark. :TU:

What I mean is that they will get better the more they work together, I like them as they are, but of course I know Buncey isnt everyone's cup of tea - and he would be the first to agree with that i.e. marmite etc
