Bunce super annoying
Re: Bunce super annoying
Bunce, as is pretty obvious, is not for everyone but personally I enjoy him and Lillis alot when they are in full flow. They get carried away at times but like a previous poster inferred they don't quite have the back up team handing them boxrec print off's of each fighter alongside a cup of green tea like some bigger budget shows may!
The production is a bit shoestring but the boxing coverage is excellent, Sky have never bothered showing someone like Moreno and the guy is a bloody elite technician of the highest order!
He's passionate, knowledgeable and opinionated - and will talk to anyone on his show! I've heard interviews from guys I've forgotten I knew. Plus Bunce's knowledge of amatuer boxing is very, very good.
Sky are good at what they do. I really like Watt, wee Barry and generally their anaylists are good. But their anchors are cardboard, airbrushed half wits. If Dave Darts and Adam Smith were booted and Ed Robinson was finally given the major air time he should have had years ago they'd take a big step in the right direction

Re: Bunce super annoying
No, I like him too. I don't appreciate slick, over articulate sports presenters. Steve Bunce at least 'is one of us', he wrote amateur shows and results for free. He actually cares about the sport. A very decent amateur died a couple of years ago who'd not boxed in 20 years and Bunce attended the funeral and asked for memories/tributes so he could highlight the lads achievements. Bunce may rub people up wrong from time to time but no one genuine is liked all the time.Casio wrote:I might be the only person on here that likes Buncey!
Re: Bunce super annoying
Maybe David could start with his own little segment on the Bunce show - maybe a betting slot.
It could be called.

Re: Bunce super annoying
I did comment on the DeGale thread on Saturday night that Bunce was very much of a 'chicken in a basket' style. He's OK for a bit but then it just grates on you and you feel like turning the sound down.
You can't knock his enthusiasm and love for the sport but I can't help but think that he's becoming a caricature of himself these days.
Although I suppose he is fronting up a specialised channel and therefore it's the hardcore he's playing to unlike Sky who is catering for the casual fan as well as the hardcore fan.
I don't mind Steve Lillis, he doesn't act like he's got a ferret running around in his pants, he plays the straight man and dilutes Bunce's hyperactivity.
I do have sympathy for the OP as I know where he's coming from with Bunce...trust me.
But maybe it's just me getting a bit less tolerant in my old age...a proper Victor Meldrew as they say in the trade.

If he's 'one of us', why does he frequently treat 'us' with contempt?palooka wrote:Steve Bunce at least 'is one of us', he wrote amateur shows and results for free.Casio wrote:I might be the only person on here that likes Buncey!
Personally I'm nuanced enough to respect his knowledge and passion, while finding his hypocrisy relating to the irreconcilable difference between his claims to 'tell it like is' and his 'cheerleading' position for one of his current employers rather distasteful.

I remember Dave's first radio interview in America and if I am right it was on Lennox Lewis and he acquitted himself really well. It was a sports radio station out of Detroit if I remember rightly. This was around 2002.

There are many people who have to take the rough with the smooth re their employer. Some of my customers aren't people i'd choose to send a great deal of time with out of work but I need the work, (till I get a windfall and can 'be genuine' and speak my mind!) Though there are some fantastic and principled people in private there aren't that many (out of the dole que) who bite the hand that feeds. I'm sure that in private moments; Bunce and others in the employ of he that can not be named; may view some decisions and actions as questionable. I imagine you feel he'd be better throwing a public strop and make his case via a blog? Maybe he could burn his bra?

As for the boxing, I have lost a lot of interest over the past few years. Peru got its first world (interim) boxing champion as Alberto Rossel beat some unbeaten Mexican hotshot for the WBA light flyweight title in Lima last week whereas 5 years ago this would have made my year - now, I don't give a shite. Never thought I would ever say that.
Re: Bunce super annoying
There's no need to patronise me as I've worked in enough environments to understand how one has to 'walk the line'. The massive difference that you're completely glossing over is that Bunce has previously still claimed to be completely objective and impartial, while rejecting any suggestions that he has had to moderate this stance to reflect his current employment situation. This is completely disingenuous.palooka wrote:There are many people who have to take the rough with the smooth re their employer. So no, in answer to your question, I don't feel he'd be better throwing a public strop, but I do feel he'd be better refraining from his very public protestations that he continues to 'tell it like it is' when the facts tell otherwise.

Humble people, generally, do not get in to a position to be noticed in the media. Dooley would be too hardcore, talking about minutiae as if it was common knowledge when only 1% of the viewers would have a clue. I love him for this, of course.
David would be a good choice - he's certainly never met a camera he didn't like. 8)
I've been helping a friend with video interviews, it is not easy by any stretch of the imagination.
And people are placing far too much on his enthusiasm. He is getting paid after all, he's not doing this for free. He has confidence and there is a place for him on TV delivering programmes on boxing, but not at the forefront. He should be alongside someone slick with boxing knowledge and a firm hand.
There must be someone out there?
Bunce was pretty enthusaistic when he didn't get paid. For years. That's why he got into a position where he does get paid.

I didn't mean to patronise you and I'm sure that you understand that if you're lucky enough to get a break in a tough and competitive environment/industry you may not be able to fully speak your mind on every subject. I've not seen any Bunce pronouncement where he says that he always 'tells it how it is, regardless of personal cost'.Deserter wrote:There's no need to patronise me as I've worked in enough environments to understand how one has to 'walk the line'. The presenters on SKY are lots better? The voices of reason and balance with commercial integrity? Does Teddy Atlas rock the boat? Do any of them?
Bunce is a sports commentator/boxing pundit. His screen persona is that; a persona.
There'd be no advertisements made or programs shown if the presenter had to believe wholeheartedly what their paymaster thought. (there'd not be many in Parliament either).
Re: Bunce super annoying
I was annoyed and dissapointed when he said on a recent Bunce boxing hour that he would "tell it as it is" and stated that had the best scenario for the amateur boys would be for the ABA's shown on allegedly. His reason... "cause on allegedly it would be repeated 50 odd times".
No, live on the BBC would be the best scenario, or even next day in the afternoon. Would generate millions more viewers.

Re: Bunce super annoying
I mean this with respect and I can see where you're coming from;
It would be the best possible scenario to have it shown live on BBC, maybe they would move Eastenders or Holby City and maybe in 3D but in the world the rest of us live in that was never going to happen. It is a good thing that the full ABA finals were shown on allegedly. They will get repeated to death and a lot of people will get to see good boxing and boxers the wouldn't have seen otherwise.
That Bunce stated the 'best possible scenario' was for the finals to be shown on Boxntaion doesn't make him a crank, lackey or a lier; it means he's realistic. They weren't going to get shown otherwise. It wasn't the best outcome out of perfection but a decent enough one for me.
Bunce can be annoying and some have genuine gripes that I certainly can't (and can't really be arsed to) counter. Not everything that comes from the mans mouth is rubbsh and I don't mind him on telly. They ought to put some different faces on and rotate it a bit, hope it happens but I wouldn't like Bunce to get thrown out .....

Re: Bunce super annoying
As a subsciber to the channel I'm fairly happy with Bunce and team but do think the format could do with a bit of spit and polish I'd agree and maybe Steve could ease back a little in his delivery but all-in all they are boxing men and get excited about the fight game. Sorry to the O.P that he don't like the sport much anymore and Bunce was the final nail.
I usually forward through a lot of commentary these days if I've a few fights to catch like last Saturday.
i watch Dickinson-Askin, Crolla- Matthews and recorded DeGale to watch after..

No - live on the BBC, given billing on all sports news broadcasts the week prior, being beamed via giant screens into the city centre of every major city, having a couple of the winners on question of sport and having Ron Boddy's naked image with only a placard covering his crown jewels beamed onto the Houses of Parliment would be the best case scenario!

Your other points are irrelevant as the whole issue is that those others you reference don't go round proclaiming they 'tell it like it is', as (like the rest of us) they're more pragmatic.

Re: Bunce super annoying
The ABAs been shown on allegedly was far better outcome than them not been shown at all. That really does tell it how is.
The 'repeated 50 times' seems a (true) line or joke. The bouts are repeated over and over. Maybe it was Bunce having a joke at the much hated (by boxing fans) program owner expense. You can't have it all ways.
Bunce is not a mealy mouthed lawer type who qualifies his every statement. I watched the ABA finals and saw some good boxers in good bouts, some of them I'd not seen before and had only read about. Got to see full bouts with decent and informative commentary.
As boxing is only really a pastime I don't go onto multiple sites; just this one and I watch it on the TV. Though the other presenters may not make overt proclamations of objectivity there is a certain implied element of journalistic probity/honesty. Surely with some of the shennigans throughout boxing some of the other 'honest joes' would make some sort of statement. They all get paid by someone and non of the paymasters have particularly sparkling reputations.
I can appreciate Bunce is not everyones cup of tea and that there are lots of people who'd do a fantastic job, unsullyed by the powers that be and that would appeal to everyone but you may forgive me if I don't hold my breath.

You're spot on - and it's to the detriment of the sport. Of course, even the few who would like to be critical find it difficult to be so due to our horrendous libel laws.palooka wrote:Though the other presenters may not make overt proclamations of objectivity there is a certain implied element of journalistic probity/honesty. But you're missing the point which Deserter has made quite clearly; none of the others have made candour their USP.

Re: Bunce super annoying
I think the problem with Bunce is that he seems to have increasingly self caricatured himself - the presentation style has become more and more heated and hyperactive, to the point where he sounds like he's going to have a stroke any second - it's just so bloody loud.
I actually quite liked the brief period where he shared a studio with Claude Abrams - Abrams was a perfect counterfoil, and would pull steve up and provide a balanced viewpoint when Bunce began riffing and spouting off.
We need someone who can reign him in a bit - then we have the best of both worlds. Bunce has bags of enthusiasm and that's a good thing, but without someone to pull him back to reality he has a tendency to get a bit overexcited, the effect is like having a hyperactive bull mastiff puppy in the room with you, gamboling around - knocking shite over, breaking furniture, and generally making a right fekking racket.
