Charlie Mance was one of the last survivors of World War I. He lied about his age and enlisted at 16. He was wounded several times, became an alcoholic as a result of his experiences and was an early member of Alcoholics Anonymous, helping many people to overcome alcohol and drug problems. For all that he lived past his 100th birthday.

Charlie used to go around the schools telling kids of his wartime experience. His greatest saying was "If you want to be in a war you are not right in the head. Nobody won World War I, we were flat out getting out of it."

Politicians are all too ready to sacrifice young people for pointless reasons.

I had a great day, went to the dawn service at the war memorial, went out for a nice cooked breakie, watched the parade and then watched the AFL at the pub. Didn't play any two up this year. Thought it was best to save some money before my big trip

Was part of the Cataflaque party at service at a memorial today, despite the cold and rain it was an awesome experience. Getting to chat to the old diggers while they bought me beers at the RSL was a lot of fun too. Today meant a lot more to me than it has in the past and I feel privileged to share in it.

Its a great day to pay our respects to the WW1 Veterans. I took the wife and kids up to the Local RSL dawn service. It was great having a chat with some of the veterans. It really makes the kids realise what these guys sacrificed for our country, when all they see now days are Ipads, XBOX's etc.

Dad fought in New Guinea between 1942 and 1945. Had recurrent malaria for some years afterwards. Like most returned blokes he never wanted to talk about
the actual war, just about some of the characters he met and peculiar incidents.
