Burns next opponent?
Burns next opponent?
I see ricky is fighting at the start of july. good to see he is keeping busy.
I'm curious as to who he is fighting, he often announces dates/venues a bit before announcing the opponent (not sure if this is the norm)
what i'm really wondering is the level of opponent he's up against. he's fought a couple of real top fighters in martinez and katsidis but 3 duffers in between them
although his last defence against paulus was a good level
i'd love to see him and mitchell in the ring. but i suspect if that was on we'd have heard of it by now

Early July, intentional clash with the matchroom show on 7th of July? Or is it the following week?

No idea!
Re: Burns next opponent?
I'd love Mitchell, but I think, reading between the lines, that Rees may be easier to make a deal with
Re: Burns next opponent?
Id like to see the Mitchell fight for an all british showdown, Id fancy Mitchell.

I think it will be Derry

That notion that "you dont earn more than the champ" is a nonsense and has been proved that way since the sport began.
Is Ricky 'Pretty Boy' Burns the Floyd Mayweather of Scotland now ? "Aye, Hod wok and dedication...aye and Iron Bru"
Lamont Peterson won't be on more than Khan for the rematch and he's now the champ. Froch earned a wedge less to fight Jermain Taylor - but nonetheless they will still earn plenty more than fighting some sh*t TBA bum.

Good point but Kevin Mitchell isn't a Khan or Taylor, he hasn't achieved that much that means he should make more than Burns.G0mez wrote:That notion that "you dont earn more than the champ" is a nonsense and has been proved that way since the sport began.

burns is the antithesis of floyd mayweather. a good decent down to earth guy.El Raincoat wrote:Good point but Kevin Mitchell isn't a Khan or Taylor, he hasn't achieved that much that means he should make more than Burns.G0mez wrote:That notion that "you dont earn more than the champ" is a nonsense and has been proved that way since the sport began.

just because boxing is full of shysters ,dodgy promoters and moneymen, and has been since the sport began, is no good reason for the champ not to get the most money.
mitchell, if he thinks he can win, should take the short money, as its an opportunity to earn more in the future.
Re: Burns next opponent?
i was also thinking derry mathews.
good story, much easier fight to make than mitchell. derry obviously has fought his way into a good position in a very fierce british lightweight division. though there are bigger fish to fry for burns.

Re: Burns next opponent?
I think the hattons have promotional rights over derry for his next 3 bouts.
The title shot came with options according to the echo.

Hopefully Mitchell, If not someone from the top 15 in the world. Derry Mathews should never be fighting burns for a world title. Hes a very average british level fighter and sparring partner is the only time burns should be sharing a ring with him.

Nope he's lined up for a beat down off SykesThereByTheGrace wrote:Well it won't be Adrien Broner thats for sure...
Re: Burns next opponent?
i agree with that part. but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't happen. if derry is with the hattons then i can see it not happening, for that reason alone.bluenoseshf wrote:Hopefully Mitchell, If not someone from the top 15 in the world. crolla was at one point lined up for burns - who despite recent international success has fallen well short in british class (arthur, johanesson) - and derry stopped crolla.
mitchell-rees winner should get burns, but meanwhile burns has to wait, and mitchell - if successful - might price himself out again.
135 is a great division in the UK, and i hope it produces one compelling challenger to burns.
Re: Burns next opponent?
Going with this weeks Ring ratings, Burns (3) against DeMarco (1) or Vasquez (2) for the vacant Ring belt would be brilliant but we all know that aint going to happen!
Its fights like that Ricky should be involved in and pushing for.

I was as disappointed as the next man when it looked that Ricky was ducking BronerThereByTheGrace wrote:Well it won't be Adrien Broner thats for sure...
but look back at that decision now and tell us it was the wrong one.
he could have made a 4th defence of his title, in a weight division he was struggling to stay in against a very dangerous fighter. the reward wasn't there to justify the risk
or he could move up a division, take on a very well known name in the sport and a decent champion in Katsidis, someone who had recently spanked a big domestic name in Mitchell, to become a 2 weight world champion.
you could argue the Katsidis fight represented a similar amount of risk but for far greater reward. and considering he went on to win it in impressive fashion i think his decision was justified
ricky took a fair bit of stick for his choice of opponent after the martinez win. but i'd say his last 2 opponents have been at a good level and a big domestic fight should be next on the cards before looking to other belt
i think he's too good for any of the names like rees, mathews, murray or crolla. i'd love to see him in with mitchell
i still fancy ricky against him as i feel he is the top man domestically, but mitchell would offer something different to the better fighters he's faced in the past and makes for a really interesting fight
