Roy 'Tiger' Williams Questions.

Post by KOJOE90 »

Does anyone know the answer to these questions I have about feared Heavyweight contender of the 1970's Roy 'Tiger' Williams of Philadelphia?

(1) Why did he retire when his was on a winning streak?
(2) What did he doe after Boxing?
(3) Whats he doing know?
(4) Anyone ever see any of his fights apart from the Shavers one?

Any stories, info or memories fight fans. :TU: :box:

I read recently that Williams was now a singer and was doing quite well for himself I think!... :box:

Hello Joe

He didnt retire his career just dried up because he could not get fights with ranked heavyweights because no one would dare fight him. The only reason he got fights with Holmes & Shavers is because they were forced to fight him by Don King & Ali respectively because they were trying to bump them off. He couldnt get fights because he was notoriously tough & dangerous and there was nothing to gain by fighting him because he was unranked.

After boxing he was in porno films and later served time for murder.

More recently he has shown up in Philly as a soul singer called 'sidiq' and even sings with Holmes & Frazier.

No no other tape of Tiger is doing the rounds other than Shavers, although Larry Holmes has a tape of his fight with Tiger that may come out on DVD soon.

Shavers told me a lot of stuff about Tiger persoanlly says hes a really nice guy these days but was not in the 70s, and watching that old tape still frightens him.

Blimey :o So even after he retired he still gave out beating in the ring... Sorry couldn't resist. Actually now you mention it the murder rap does sound familuar with Williams, but with so many fighters spending time in The Big House I wasn't sure. Cheers.

Cool, glad to hear he is doing something constructive and creative with his life.

It's a terrible shame that there is not more footage of Willaims doing the rounds I would love to see his fights against Jimmy Young, Richard Dunn and Henry Clark etc. I bet someone somewhere has got some hidden away, but is too tight to share it with other fans.

The Holmes DVD sounds very interesting though. :TU:

Tiger Williams was in Kinshasa with Ali as he was meant to fight on the undercard of the Rumble In The Jungle against Henry Clark I think???

But the fight was called off at the lst minute due to very heavy rain so it is possible Williams bumped into Big George.

I wonder if they ever sparred at anytime? :o
