Other than “Ring” and “Boxing Illustrated” some of the other magazines that I really enjoy are “Self Defense” of the late 1920s and early 1930s, which also published a couple of good record books. Some people like “Arena” of the same time frame, but I don’t care much for it.

The “National Police Gazette” from later 1800s thru 1932 when it sank is probably my favorite old publication. It started publication back up sometime around the 1940s and went on through to the 1970s, or 1980s, but it wasn’t nearly as good as the first run of “Police Gazette”…especially the pre 1910 “Police Gazette, which are my favorite.”

“Boxing Blade” of the 1920s was very good also.

For West coast coverage, “The Knockout” was very good, which ran weekly sometime between the late 1920s thru the 1950s. “Referee,” “Redhead,” “Referee and Redhead” and “Double KO” were also good earlier West coast publications.

“Boxing and Wrestling,” which was published by Stanley Weston in the 1950s and early 1960s is a very good publication, which that publication ended the friendship of Weston and Nat Fleischer as it was a hearty competitor to “The Ring.” Also of the era “Ringside Boxing Record” is favorite as they published huge lists of coast-to-coast results, I think it started in the late 1940s and carried into the early 1960s, but I’m not certain…it’s a great source of results though.

Moving into the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s there were a string of boxing publications that were put out by Victory sports, which wasn’t the best, but I do enjoy reading through “World Boxing,” “International Boxing,” and “Big Book of Boxing.” There were also many other brands of boxing mags from all over the world during this time of which the ones that I like best were “Boxing Beat,” “KO,” and “Hank Kaplan’s Boxing Digest.”

UK “Boxing News” has been a great publication ever since 1909 and also another UK publication that I like very much is the “Mirror of Life/Boxing World” of the teen years (I'm not sure when it began, or when ended.).

“Australian Ring Digest” is a favorite also as they had some good writing and coverage.

“Ring Mundial” was in Spanish, but they had a long run of publication. There were also several very good boxing publications from all around the world that had successful runs, but I have very few of any, but I’d certainly like to obtain a bunch.

I’ve been working on putting a list together of every magazine ever published, which is a daunting task to say the least. A fellow IBRO member, I don’t recall his name off the top of my head, put together a very good list of boxing magazines, which appeared in a back issue of the “IBRO Journal”, but his list is missing several publications, although he did have a hell of a lot listed, speaking of which, I said the early “Police Gazette” was my favorite publication, I take that back, the “IBRO Journal” is without a doubt my favorite boxing publication. I’ve got every issue published, which is around 90 total issues since it started back in the 1980s, but what makes it so great is that not only is there loads of material which can be found in no other publication, but it also corrects a lot of the errors that are constantly reported and repeated in other boxing magazines throughout history.

Was the Ibro journal ever published in the UK?. I find it very hard to get any magazines pre-40s... I've seen Police Gazette at memorabillia fayes but they are usually very pricey. I've always liked Stanley Weston publications because of the mix of stories and features on both modern and oldtime fighters. Thats what started me off reading about the oldtime fighters. Early Boxing News was good for stories on fighters of the past as well up to about the late 80s.... its just a shadow of its former self nowadays. I recently got about 30 copies of a magazine called 'Fighters' which was published in Austrailia in about '72 to '74... concentrates mainly on the Australian scene abut also on world scene too and has great poster type photos on covers.

In the 1980s I used to read The Ring, World Boxing and KO every month. The Ring always seemed the most balanced and international of the magazines. From about 84-86 KO seemed to be obsessed with Don Curry. They used to have some good features though like fantasy matchups and round by round analysis of fights.

I liked the way The Ring showcased certain fighters before they became common knowledge. I also like their results round up from around the world. They also included old timers stories. I really appreciated these.

I also used to read Boxing Illustrated and Boxing News. The Ring was bought out by the people at KO (I think) because the typeface and stories began tor esemble KO. The magazine became something of a mix of the two but they dropped their linear ratings and took up a KO style ratings system. This is when I really became a fan of Boxing Illustrated becasue they made some attempt to champion the linear history of the sport.

Up until just recently I had back copies of the Ring from 1977 when I started buying it until KO bought it out.

Loved the mag.

Boxing Illustrated and Boxing Monthly were another two I would occasionally read.

I especially like The Ring of the early 80s when there was a great mix of stories on the modern fighters and fighters of the past. I also liked the posters which they used to have in the covers at that time. Ko was a great mag in the early to mid-80s too and I liked the posters they always had in the middle. Both Ko and The Ring changed format quite a bit in the late 80s and I've never been as keen on them since. They seem to be almost the same magazine now.
Big Book of Boxing and Boxing Illustrated were my other favourites of the early 80s along with Boxing Beat..... at one point I was getting all 5 every month with some World Boxing and Boxing News mixed in........ those were the days!... :box:

I know what you mean. The thing was in those days you couldn't get news from the States or Asia or Latin America like you can these days. Sometimes the first I ever heard of a fighter was in The Ring. I'd never even know a title had changed hands until they reported on it in the magazines. When I got my hands on the latest issue it was like gold. I'd read it cover to cover for 3 weeks and then be counting the days until the next issue.

I remember my uncle digging a load of 1960s The Ring magazines out for me. I was in heaven.
