Africa Olympic Qualifier

Post by donnellon »

Africa qualified 1 out of the 91 boxers at the World championships and yet now get another 48 from their qualifier which begins in Casablanca, Morocco, on 28 April! Ah well... we'll still have at go at picking them after the draw.

Only two African boxers have qualified thusfar one through the Worlds and one through the WSB.Both boxers come from Algeria and they have a good chance of qualifying their other eight boxers here. The Arabic nations should dominate with Morocco and Algeria to the fore and lesser so Egypt and Tunisia.Cameroon and Botswana also have strong teams. With 48 places available all semi-finalists and some quarter-finalists will go to London 2012 except at the two heaviest weights when only the finalists will qualify.Uganda do not appear to have sent a team
My top four in each weight are
108

Abdelali Flissi MOROCCO
Peter Mungai KENYA
Bathuse Mogajane BOTSWANA
Namibian and Ethiopian boxers could surprise

The prelims are now over and the first quarter-finals start on Tuesday. It is possible to qualify here without winning a bout. You can get a bye into the quarters and providing you face the eventual winner or the runner-up you will find yourself at London 2012.On the other hand you can be the second best in your weight class and go out in the prelims and fail to qualify. There has to be a better way to do this, when you realise the likes of Selimov and Ward will not be in London.I will post the qualifiers as they happen.

It's daft to have qualifications based on losing to somebody who has no reason to go on and win or even reach a final, they may be injured, cut or exhausted or may even have a vested interest in keeping the guy they beat out of the Olympics eg if you beat Ward on a countback you would want him out of the games.
