Best heavyweight after peak

Post by flatnoseflynn »

Plenty of threads about fighters fighting each other in their prime. What about heavyweights after their prime (usually their last fight!) fighting each other Like and old Louis vs an old frazier..........

Kind of hard since people have various definitions of "past peak" . . some are easier like post-retirement Louis, post-Manilla Ali . . but others more difficult.

yuk who wants to see ali 81 v tyson 2005 :oo

The only one of these type matches id have liked to have seen were the incomparable Foreman (98) v Lewis (2004) or marciano in his last match just for curiosity value

Thats just a God awful comparison. Lewis had been in his prime only about two years earlier, while Foreman was already retired by 1998 and had been past his best since his defeat against Ali MORE THAN twenty years before!

This is like saying Mike Tyson 1991 vs Joe Frazier 1976...

I'll take Charles, his entire Heavyweight run was post-prime and he is underrated in the division for what he did.

Charles is always under-rated at HW. He beat Walcott, who everybody fawns over, three out of four, among other accolades, but is forever the invisible champion.

Ali, Holyfield and Holmes all achieved a lot after their primes.

I see what you mean. I misread the TS's origional post to read a matchup between versions of HW champs in their last fight hence those admittedly awful matchups. But I was scraping the barrel given what i misunderstood to be fairly stringent conditions.

I'd rephrase it to say the Foreman of 91 v the Lewis of 2004 I think that would have been interesting.

Ironically I find your suggestion of Tyson 91 v Frazier 76, said to illustrate a awful matchup, as a fascinating one and worthy of a thread in it's own right.

How do you see Frazier 76 v Tyson 91?

I see it as I do a prime match-up between them --- a quick Tyson TKO. Tyson was starting to exit his peak around 1991. Frazier had absolutely nothing left after Manila (Foreman under-performed against him).

This is a shockingly literate post. Did you manage to find a sober moment?

That's a shame, as they are rarely literate.
