Punching In The Throat.

I remember reading Boxing News years back after the Jeff Harding and Tom Collins fight. Collins said the Harding had punched him in the throat and I'm pretty certain that BN said that if was an illegal punch.

Is it against BBBofC rules?

I'll never forget the vicious punch to the throat taken by the Canadian, Donny Lalonde against Sugar Ray Leonard. Lalonde was doing very well until that landed, having dumped Leonard on the seat of his pants with his trademark right, but could no longer fight once that shot landed. Years later, his throat still gave him problems - all from that punch.

I remember him getting a nasty thumb in the eye against Duane Thomas - in a fight he was winning, for the WBC Light Middle title... John turned his back in pain, fight was stopped. Cannot remember the throat punch.

There is a famous picture of Ray Mancini taking one in the adams apple against Arguello.

I think that pretty much all throat shots land accidently, it is hard enough to bang someone on the chin, the throat is damn near impossible

You would have to take a poor stance for that to happen. Nothing illegal about it, unlike a rabbit punch to the back of the neck.

That injury cost Lalonde another title fight, he was signed to fight Jeff Harding but re-injured his throat in sparring. Shame as that would of been a bit of a shoot out fight

The Harding/Collins fight was a strange one. Collins nearly knocked Harding down in the second round but Harding recovered and drove Collins back into the ropes at the end of that round, then Collins refused to leave his corner for the third round.

Having paid to watch a WBC Light Heavyweight title fight the Brisbane crowd really let Collins know what they thought of him.

Wilfredo Gomez punched Juan Meza really hard in the throat/adams apple. Has to be really dangerous, at least as dangerous as a rabbit punch?

Yep and for a year Mugabi had to read the most vindictive ignorant articles from Jeff Ryan in KO Magazine about how he was a "coward" and "looking for an excuse to quit" and "the most disgraceful act of surrender in boxing since no mas"... his injury was actually severe.

There's no defence against it, it can kill (according to some martial arts) and it's a way a hunter can kill a snared rabbit.

I thought it was called a rabbit punch because rabbits box eachother behind the head when they have mating fights.

I was once kicked in the throat and decked from it. Real flush kick as well.

Danny Lopez took a punch in the throat from Jose Torres back in the day. He won the fight but has been left with a croaky voice.
Kenny Norton essentially paralysed Duane Bobicxk with a right uppercut to the throat. He then teed off on a defenceless Bobick and won in 59 seconds.

Very interesting!

I'm guessing there aren't more occurances of this due to the fact that most boxers keep their chins tucked down, thereby protecting the throat to a degree, and also the size of a glove makes it hard to land with a lot of force directly on the throat area.

i.ve seen this punch land before and when i see it played back it seemed that the punch landed on the shoulder and slid up and hit the throat i think it would be very hard to try and land a punch on the throat area
