Last Night's Don King Card

Wayne Braithwaite and Kelvin Davis both lost last night at Cruiserweight, Guyana's Braithwaite was stopped in four by unheralded Guillermo Jones while Steve Cunningham won a 12 rounder over Davis.

Former prospect Owen Beck lost a decision to Ray Austin which means he could be a sure fire opponent for Audley next time round, he has shown credentials, Bantamweight Tim Austin also won in the fifth over Reynaldo Hurtado.

Any thoughts?

I was reading about things on the current scene. The Braithwaite fight sounded a cracker, and whilst Braithwaite was in trouble from the start, it apparently shouldn't have been stopped that early.

Is Beck or Auston the surefire opponent for Audrey? (It's that surefire I don't know which one you mean :P ) Beck was sodding 7th in the WBC's last ratings, which is an absolute joke. Austin now moves straight up to the IBF's #2. On these reckonings, Audrey should be linear champ 10 times over by Christmas.

It's ok mate i was just joking that now Beck has lost to Austin he will be considered as a safe bet for Audley...nothing has been signed of course as Audley is already in talks with Otis Tisdale...ok so i made that up too.

Anyway...Cunningham is becoming a decent force in the division, i expected him to be stopped by Davis. Good win and well done to Riddick Blowe for predicting it on the Current Scene 8)

I will certainly be knocked off the top of the prediction league though i suspect i have had a bad week

I tipped Cunningham to win a UD in the prediction league, so I'm happy with that. Safe to say I didn't tip Braithwaite to get stopped in 4, though........

a near flawless week for me in the prediction league with those two plus the beyer and urkal fights.

Jones wasn't unheralded, he's already stopped Davis this year! Plus getting robbed against Johnny boy of course.

I had a real feeling Jones would rough-house his way straight through the limited braithwaite. Jones is a very tough, rough proposition. Sort of like glen johnson if I remember right. He is the most worthy challenger to Mormeck after his last 2 wins.

Edit3, ah O Neil Bell holds the IBF title. Jebus, this cruiserweigth division has suddenly become really crowded and exciting with loads of top matchups! Where the hell did that emerge from? We got Mormeck, Bell, Cunningham, Jones, and in a parallel dimension, Nelson. Suddenly a lot going on there. thanks to king I suppose.

I went for Jones on pts, but I also went for Sheika by KO.

Jones deserves a crack now, remember people have been saying that he beat Cunnigham but didn't get the decision. That draw that Nelson scored looks increasingly good but lets not forget Jones was robbed there too.

With Ray Austin in the reckoning now for a heavyweight title fight, I think I might just get a rope now. I won't forget him looking awful when getting stopped by Levin. If Larry Donald though gets an eliminator then perhaps show should Austin as many people thought he should have had the decision in their recent bout.

Another result from that show one time P4P er Tim Austin return at Featherweight and apparently looking very good. I hope he can fast track his way to the title picture as he was an excellent fighter.

The Urkal result was the most interesting of the week for me. I'd made up my mind that if he didn't stop Nesterenko late then serious questions had to be raised. Given it went to a decision where one judge had only one point in it, appears to show that Urkal is definately on the wane. Then again, he's at welterweight now...

Jones stopping Braithwaite was a great result for him, but I still think it will be a boxer-type who is first to beat Mormeck.

Yes i think Urkal is definately on the wane mate, he only won a marginal victory against a limited operator in Nesterenko.

Did you have Hill beating him, knockout? I ordered the fight but was never sent it, so haven't seen it. The majority of online reports seemed to say he started slow (as usual) but was landing the harder punches in the middle (as usual) but ended up finishing shakily (unusual). I think he might have been hurt in the 11th, would be good if someone could confirm.

That result plus those reports about him being sparked by a middleweight in sparring, were what made the Braithwaite unification fight interesting for me. I was surprised how well his chin held up, but have to admit I was shocked at those early body punches that he just laughed off - those would have killed 95% of other fighters. How he went on to get stronger after absorbing that onslaught was quite astonishing.

The scorecards were also quite astonishing, and I don't know why but I just get the feeling King is out to screw him.

I know that mate, I didn't mean literally first to beat Mormeck, but the first person to beat him in his current reign... my fault, in retrospect it was ambiguous.

I have seen Mormeck-Gurov and Gurov kept Mormeck under control for periods of the fight with his movement and boxing, it was only when Gurov slowed and Mormeck was able to unload his power shots that Gurov was taken out.

I'm disappointed in Kelvin Davis, he seemed the type to bring some colour to the grey division at world level. Now even Braithwaite is out of the picture too. Is Mormeck v Jones really all there is to look forward to?

O'Neil Bell certainly isn't a great attraction, no real footwork to speak of and looks sloppy at times. I think I've seen some cruiserweight talent emerging on the ESPN shows but could be wrong.

Bring on Haye v Hobson and Enzo v Thompson.
