Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
if not where would you rank him amongst the all-time super middleweights? He definitely makes mine with great wins over hopkins, kessler, roy jones, bika, and lacy

Hopkins and Jones were at 175.big train express wrote:if not where would you rank him amongst the all-time super middleweights? He definitely makes mine with great wins over hopkins, kessler, roy jones, bika, and lacy
I rank him #1. All considered (and there aint that much to consider, in terms of either his CV or the divisions history), I think he deserves it.
Jones and Toney would have pretty handily beaten him, though. Jones would border on an ass kicking.

Re: Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
In the super middle division, he's my #1. Barkely ahead of him? What a joke . . .
Re: Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
I think his record at 168 is definitely better than anyone else's, he's definitely #1 in the division. I don't see how he could not be in anybody's Top 5, the Super Middleweight division is pretty shallow historically. Not a lot to choose from and I agree Barkley being ahead of him is nonsense.

Barkley? Explain why you would ever have Barkley over Clazghe at 168? Not only does Clazaghe have a far better resume than the blade at the weight, hes also levels above him in talent.tommo100 wrote:no,ive got him well below

Re: Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
Toney wouldnt beat Calzaghe clearly, at his best he was far too inconsistent to have an easy time with Joe. In fact if James fought Joe like he did some of his opponents back in the day, I could see Joe taking a close decision. A volume puncher with decent defence and a good chin like Joe would trouble JamesGoodnight, Irene wrote:Hopkins and Jones were at 175.big train express wrote:if not where would you rank him amongst the all-time super middleweights? I was thinking of Toney on his best day.
I respect Calzaghe as a guy who'd be very difficult for men better than himself to beat, but I'll never regard him as being on the Jones-Hopkins-Toney level.

Toney's level is elevated past his desire.

My favourite line on Toney ever came from Jim Lampley, looking at the tale of the tape (I think it was one of the Rahman bouts)...
"Toney, at 237lbs.......is a fat tub of goo."

Re: Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
Roy's record is comparable, he would be my #1.
Re: Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
So long as Joe C doesn't stand right in front of Toney, he'd win. A lightening fast southpaw with a chin and stamina who throws in some movement, isn't likely to end up in Toney's win column.
Re: Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
Joe Calzaghe is in my top 5 Super Middleweights.
Frankly I think it would be difficult to exclude him from anyone's top 5 of that weight Division, his over-a-decade title reign and his unifications MUST put him in the top five.
And in a related topic, he most probably should be ranked as the Number One Super Middleweight ever, but as I say, that's a different topic.

Most definite top 3
Re: Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
Steve Collins in nobody's top 5?
Re: Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
Joe beats prime Toney imo . This style would give Toney Major probs. Young Toney been outboxed on more than one occasion. Prime Joe would only be outboxed by prime Roy and that is up for debate

He's in mine.jrc26 wrote:Steve Collins in nobody's top 5?
Eubank and Benn are basically in everyone's top five, and Collins beta them both TWICE!

Eubank and Calazaghe should both be in the top five.
On acheivement, I'd probably have Chong Pal Park in there as well.
Anyone who say Barkley has been smoking crack.

Re: Is Calzaghe in your top 5 super middleweights?
Someone has to set this thread straight. The Rolls Royce of the SMW's is the Phantom. Sven Ottke.
Are you aware that The Phantom beat Antonio Tarver, Michael Moorer, Chris Byrd? That is a fact Jack. Calzaghe didn't accomplish that in his career did he?
I didn't think so.
Don't sell the Phantom Short. We are talkin' smooth ride here.
