John Rawlings

Post by Tunney »

I've been trying to enjoy the Uzelkov-Jabbarov fight right now, but Rawlings is such a terrible commentator that I decided to switch over to a Russian-language telecast.

Rawlings has a monotone, sometimes nasal voice. He sounds very bored, as if he wants to be somewhere else, and so fails to create any excitement. He complains about the same things every telecast.

He goes on about certain boxers being "plodding" and "one-dimensional" in his nasal voice, and usually openly roots against Eastern European boxers. His comments clearly indicate that he doesn't like East European boxers, and his scorecards consistently show an anti-European bias.

There are LOTS of good blow-by-blow commentators in the UK. Steve Bunce did an excellent job on some allegedly fights (such as Sylvester-Proksa). And I've always liked Ian Darke, who has a MUCH better voice than Rawlings and is fair in his comments about all the boxers regardless of where they are from. They would have no problem finding someone better than Rawlings.

I think he's the best in the business, I even enjoy the predictable "He's looking to end it, right here...right now!"

I quite like Rawlings. Worst commentary I've heard recently was Colonel Bob Sheridan on allegedly for the Mayweather-Cotto fight. I almost threw up midway through the fifth round.

Are you his mother?

I agree, Sheridan was sickening.

But Rawlings is similar - he's sickeningly biased for or against certain boxers too.

I don't think Rawling is that bad. The problem with the Colonel is that he knows everyone and so he just spends entire commentaries coming off with spin. I seem to remember him doing the telecast's for King Vision TV a few years back and he couldn't/wouldn't criticise anything that was going on.

being nit-picky i hate they way commentators alway say a boxer is from east europe just because they come from a country east of Germany.

Gennady Golovkin is from Kazakhstan which is in central Asia, not east Europe. He was even called the 'Balken boxer' by someone on Friday. which is completly wrong

I hope they did note though that it is the greatest country in the world, and that all other countries are run by little girls.

Col Bob Sheridan on Mayweather v Cotto was like listening to the North Korean State Radio's commentary on Kim Young-Il 75th defence of the World heavyweight Title, a title he won from Muhammad Ali in 1967 aged 16 in his first bout.

You would rather listen to somebody speaking Russian ? - why not just turn the volume down/off ?

The option to have arena noise only and no commentary should be actively explored.

Yes please.

Because I enjoy the sound of a crowd while I'm watching a fight.

Sheridan is extremely biased in favor of American boxers. He makes a fool of himself by going too far with it.
