floyd vs meldrick taylor

Post by tommo100 »

into all things floyd at the moment
how would he do against a 1990 meldrick taylor, pre chavez version
i can see major problems for floyd, taylor was lightning and i don`t think floyd could mount sufficient offense to score a victory

Fun fight, I don't think Floyd has ever fought anyone with faster hands. Meldrick would do well, in the end Floyd's IQ in there is too high and his counters would bust Taylor up. Close UD for mayweather.

This is a great match...Two complete fighters in my view. I think Floyd wins this one.

I wasn't even thinking about that. I was more into the complete fighter comment, two guys without a lot of power and one that blocks punches with his face.

Man, this would be an awesome fight!

No doubt Taylor would be the faster puncher, but Floyd will apply the counters and pot shots all night i reckon. I see a frustrated Meldrick.

Taylor is one of my favourite fighters ever to watch, but i wouldnt call him a complete fighter.

How much success will Mayweather really have on the counter? Its not just Taylor's speed, its his work-rate --- he is a very real threat to simply outwork Mayweather. Of course, Taylor has his deficits here. Ring IQ, adaptability, footwork, defense...Mayweather, Mayweather, Mayweather.

I have a feeling Mayweather takes this, but its damn, damn close...and I would not be surprised if Mayweather just couldnt get off enough against Taylor's whirlwind offensive.

Yep, you make a good point. Taylor did have a high work rate.

Its hard to make an opinion about Taylor without being a little biased.

As much as i want to say Meldrick's work rate and offense would break Floyd, i just cant see it happening.

It'll be an entertaining fight.

I think this fight looks quite a bit like Floyd's scrap with Cotto only with Meldrick getting a few more rounds from the judges thanks to the insane torrents of punches he would choose to lay unto Floyd as Mayweather potshots his dome.

I'd say Floyd just nicks this because of that. Taylor would be more clearly hurt from individual shots but he'd keep Floyd's nose flowing with that machine gun assault even as he walks to the traps.

Meldrick's handspeed was greatly overrated as were his boxing skills.

I don't think Meldrick's handspeed was overrated, but his boxing skills probably were. And that's what would hurt him against Floyd.Mayweather by UD, after some tense early moments.

So far as I know, Floyd has only faced one fighter with comparable speed--Judah.
Floyd struggled for four rounds before Judah did his usual fade job.
Taylor wouldn't do so.
Taylor by close decision for me. As for a prime Taylor taking Floyd's shots, it took nearly 12 rounds of a horrible beating for him to succumb v. Chavez.
The funny thing is that I'd clearly favor Floyd at 140 over Chavez. He'd use movement and wouldn't stupidly exchange like Taylor did. As so many have said, Floyd has higher ring IQ.
Cotto's work rate was nothing like what Taylor would provide. If the shots he was eating from JCC didn't slow him down, Floyd's wouldn't.

Floyd would use that shoulder roll defense to avoid being hurt too bad. downside, Meldrick never lets up and takes almost every round. lets throw Floyd to Terry Norris next.

Boxing isn't a sprint . . Taylor's fast hands would've been nullified somewhat by Floyd's superior firepower and countering/timing. Meldrick was a great offensive 'flash' fighter but defensively he had more holes than swiss cheese, and without a big punch that will cost you heavily vs someone like Floyd.

Me too. Boxing's full of "A beats B, but C beats A, & then B beats C" type of affairs. I think what Rover mooted would come to pass with PBF/Chavez/Taylor.

i think Mayweather's countering would bring Taylor's workrate down considerably, myself. cleverer fighters tend to do that to dumber ones.
