Would boxers today like to train everday / fight every week?

Post by dalcumly »

Just reading Bob Lonkhurst's new biography on Eric Boon. Based in the 1930's ,it is clear that boxers trained everyday and fought roughly once a week ,earning ,for so doing , a weekly wage in reality , like everybody else . I suspect that there was very little need for extensive sparring .

I don't know the answer , but would boxers today be prepared to fight much more often , against good opposition , but earning less each fight than they do currently . What I mean is , if you are a decent pro, perhaps fighting six , 6 or 8 x 3's ,per year and earning say £7,000 - £8,000 , wouold that be preferable to 20 fights a year and earning say £10,000 ???

I would be interested to know the views .

I remember Craig Watson as commonwealth champ saying he wished he was a journeyman so he could fight more often  Top man.

Interesting question. In the 1930s there was no TV so I would imagine there was a much greater demand for live sport and it was therefore financially viable to put on many more shows. I'm not sure it would be possible to have guys fighting as often nowadays.

I 100 percent wish I could. I think I'd be a miles better fighter if i was active. If everyone got busy it would be great. Four months I've not boxed for and I've being in the gym virtually every day.

I'd love to fight more regular, I'd be in favour of a basic wage based on ability and bonuses for wins, I'd be happy to fight once a month for a wage, that would be a dream job for me

I'm delighted with the responses especially from Jeff Thomas and Curtis Woods . I think there is a perception amongst promoters and matchmakers that boxers will not fight unless they get a certain amount of cash , when the truth might be that if the small hall promoters put on more shows the boxers would take less money -and two things would happen . Local fight fans would turn up for regular local shows and there would be greater opportunities for boxers to get bouts .
I know that promoters can tell you how much they have to outlay before a blow is struck ,but I really believe that REGULAR small hall shows can be profitable if they are put on where there is a demand .

Isn't there a rule imposed by the BBBoC that if you get stopped you can't fight for a period afterwards. I think it's something like 6 weeks??? Or have I made that up from a day dream?

That would make fighting absolutely EVERY week or month impossible tho. I think boxers could in their early careers fight once a month, but how many promoters put shows on every single month? Promoters nowdays too seem reluctant to let fighters fight on other promoters shows.

I think up to a certain level it is possible and not that unusual. But if your asking would Floyd and Manny Pac be willing to have a rematch the week after their fight in winter *crosses fingers* I'd say there is quite literally more chance of seeing Elvis Pressley and the Loch Ness monster fly past in a UFO.

Wow same... I've got so many things to juggle. Training full time even for ok money would be awesome. At the moment boxing is just a hobby to me. I want more though

This is a ridiculous concept in this day and age. If boxers fought every week in even semi-competitive fights they would all have to retire after a few months, they would destroy themselves. Besides, how would the top-level fighters get enough competition? Would they rematch other top guys ad finitum, or just have keep-busy fights against journeymen? What would be the point? And how would the promotion work? How would they find the time to get in all the necessary press conferences in various territories, interviews etc? How would they manage promotion wranglings and negotiations in time? How would the sanctioning bodies react? Would they enforce eliminators? Who decides who fights? How would guys like David Price get enough opponents?

Can you imagine this happening in the heavyweight division? lol

Having said this I really wish the top guys fought three times a year at least, but twice seems to be the norm these days. Guys like Price should be fighting every two months, especially at his age, even if it's against a succession of tough trial horses. At his rate of development he's going to be 32 years old before he's even had 20 fights.

Whilst every week the concept of a fight is OTT if we're talking about fighters fighting regularly then this has everything to do with the Promotor, not the fighter.
Every 8 weeks is a reasonable cycle for any fighter.
When Rhodes turned pro in 1995 he had 5 fights that year.
Then 6 in 1996 and 6 in 1997.
During the period 14th December 96 to 14th March 97 he won and secured the Lonsdale Belt outright.
1997 culminated in a defeat and guess what ?
4 fights in 2 years thereafter.
Boxing is a game of snakes and ladders - with the rungs of the ladders covered in grease.
If it can be done in the nineties why not now ?
Blame the Promotors.

Believe me, some would, most fighters don't get enough fights, less people watch boxing now then before.
