Tom Cribb... and the lion skin belt

Post by JDC »

I've read quite a bit about Cribb, and that he passed his lion skin belt onto Tom Sayers. Upon Sayers death in 1865 the belt was sold, along with a Silver Trophy (also donated from Cribb), to cover debts. They made a total of just over £50... but, who were they sold to and where are they now?

Good chance that without some sort of preservation, that lion skin belt just disintegrated over time.

The Cup was probably melted down, when the silver price was acceptable. Would be cool if either were ever found, and could be bought and awarded, but it's not very likely :TU:

Were did the lion skin belt come from?
Was it from an infamous lion shot in South or East Africa?
(like the man-eaters of Tsavo)
(althought there still is a surviving population of Eurasian Lons
in the Gir forest of India).
You just never know.
Maybe it came from a captive lion that kicked the bucket at the Zoological Gardens in London England?

:D
The first English heavyweight champion to receive a belt was Tom Cribb, who was awarded one made of lion skin and decorated with silver claws.

It was presented to him in December 1810 by King George III after his victory over American Tom Molineaux.
