Warren laughs off King challenge

Post by Neri »

DON King wants to get his hands on Amir Khan.

The larger-than-life American promoter will get a close-up look at the Bolton boxer's enormous potential when he sits at ringside on Saturday.

King will be in Cardiff to watch his fighter Evans Ashira attempt to prise the WBO World Super-Middleweight title from Welshman Joe Calzaghe,

But with Khan on the undercard, King will be paying particular attention to the 18-year-old Olympic silver medallist, who he would like to take under his wing.

The teenager is, however, contracted to allegedly, but the evergreen King says he would like to work with the British promoter.

King said: "Any time a guy wants to fight and he has the will, the skill and the talent he can go as far as he wants.

"It's up to him. And he has a very skilful and masterful director with him in allegedly, who I have told I want to be his partner.

"We could work together to develop it but he has not answered me.

"Nevertheless, that's how much I think of Khan,"

Warren knows that Khan has enormous earning potential and not surprisingly his reply to King's suggestion was: "My answer's in the post."

King, who came to fame in the Seventies when he promoted fights involving Muhammed Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman, is well-known for his eccentric behaviour and outlandish style.

The American will be joined at ringside for the 5,500 sell-out event by Charlotte Church and her boyfriend Gavin Henson, a member of the Wales Grand Slam rugby union squad, who have also been invited as special guests.

Meanwhile Calzaghe advised Khan to follow his lead and "train like a challenger" for the rest of his career, to achieve his goal of becoming a long-standing world champion.

The British pair are at the opposite ends of their career - one the longest reigning world champion in boxing and the other just 109 seconds as a professional.

Calzaghe was forthcoming with advice for Khan on how best to deal with the pressures of top-class boxing.

"Once you win a title, train like a challenger," said the Newbridge fighter.

"When people believe too much in their own ability, they get beaten, like Naseem Hamed and Lennox Lewis.

"I give all my opponents full respect, even if their records suggest I should beat them easily.

"But I don't need to tell Amir that. He wants to be a world champion and I'm sure he will be."

Funny article taken from http://www.thisislancashire.co.uk.

I hate the way Calzaghe has the nerve to criticise Lewis and Hamed, he has no right. Hamed got beat yes but it was by a legend in Barrera, and who has Joe fought that is anywhere near that calibre ?

Yeah train like a challenger and one day you might fight a worthy one for your esteemed WBO belt Amir. With friends like Calzaghe Khan don't need any enemies :D

Amir aint stupid he has already said he aspires to MORALES and BARRERA not that prick Calzaghe. From an interview with amir khan i read that he'll train hard for every fight and not take it for granted. Geez, it's blatant that calzaghe is trying to stick his big nose in the way to get some of the media exposure "great championg like calzaghe" my ass. He is a shit champion and will get KOed against Lacy :x
