If he can learn to use his upper body then in time he will most likely be able to live an idependent life whereas there would have been no chance if he was completely paralysed. Its easy and understandable to go into a severe depression if you can't see a chance of that happening after these kind of injuries.

A friend of mine fell of a table (about 2 feet) and ended up Paralysed from the neck down. Doctors are really stunned, yes there was a trauma but nothing broken, no visible nerve damage, this is about 6 years ago now.... so you can imagine probably had well over a hundred scans etc - and still cannot understand why he is unable to move and has no feeling.

My father saw him fall and it was quite surreal cause he immediately and cooly said to him "I'm f*cked". When the paramedics took him to hospital and trying to assure him that he would be okay. He was saying "I hope so, but I don't think I will ever move again". This was a person you used to work in the building industry (and he was at the time) and saw plenty of big accidents - including my old man falling 16 foot the year before - ending up with a busted back but generally fine.

Permanently paralysed, dude, or have you made some sort of recovery?
My spinal cord was severed so I had no chance I can move my arms a bit an just about able to use a laptop but permanently paralysed from the neck down, I can handle it an i'm sure Paul has the mental strength as well, the next month will be crazy an he'll need all the support he gets but from what i've read he has good people around him so he's halfway there.

Sickening. I broke my spine - L1 & L2 (lumber region), but got away with it. Things like this make me realise how lucky I am.

That's the key thing. I'm sure there are not many better ways of finding out who really loves you, it must be hard work for all involved. If Williams is in Facebook or what have you, you should leave it a few weeks to see how he's progressing and then drop him a line, I'm sure you could give him some decent advice. Stay strong, mate.
Thanks, yeh I don't have facebook but I see he's on twitter so i'll see how it goes
