Gabriel Montoya of Maxboxing.com might be onto the story of the decade. Apparently he has sources who are divulging blockbuster information, if the information is actually true.
Montoya is gaining recognition for his drug testing and potential cover-up stories and was recently countered with a letter from Golden Boy law firm Lerman, Painter & Spitz LLP.
Jeffrey Spitz is none too pleased by Montoya's work.
In a letter to Montoya dated May 23, 2012, Spitz wrote: "...(Montoya) asserted to the Nevada State Athletic Commission that (he has) received information that Golden Boy attempted to obtain an agreement from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) not to disclose a potential B sample test until after the tested boxer had participated in the scheduled fight. (Montoya) further asserted that Golden Boy had entered into an agreement with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) which contained such a provision. You have also claimed that Golden Boy entered into a contract with USADA for testing in connection with Floyd Mayweather fights which provided inadvertant use exemption that would permit a positive test to be excused of the result were inadvertant use. And that Mayweather had tested positive on three occasions which were excused under the inadvertant use provision."

Whoa.
Spitz of course denies Montoya's views, writing, "Each of these statements is false and defames and severely damanges Golden Boy and others (most obviously Mr. Mayweather) and its and their reputations in the boxing and sports community.
If Montoya has a credible source, this development suggests someone, perhaps from the Nevada State Athletic Commision, might have shared crucial information to Montoya, who is a respected journalist and though I don't know him, I highly doubt he would fabricate anything so potentially damaging.
Actually, if you remember, two years ago, in the midst of the Pacquiao-Mayweather first round of negotiations which were ultimately canceled by Mayweather, the award-winning boxing scribe Thomas Hauser, was pressuring Oscar De La Hoya in February 2010 to sign a waiver so that the Nevada State Athletic Commission could release records of drug tests conducted on De La Hoya when he was fighting. The implication was that De La Hoya might have tested positive for something during his career and perhaps because of similar contract provisions, to those mentioned above by Montoya, those De La Hoya test results were kept concealed from becoming public knowledge.
As far as I know, De La Hoya never did sign the waiver to release his performance-enhancing drug test results. And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to conclude why.
Mayweather has famously been the leading accuser of PED use by other boxers in the sport. But as we all know, when you point a finger at someone, three of your fingers are pointing back at yourself. Could it be possible that Mayweather is a PED user for years and via Golden Boy contract provisions, has been protected from having his tests released to the public?
Is it possible that someone on the inside of the Nevada State Athletic Commission has grown weary of the hypocracy and subsequently has taken the courageous action to inform Montoya?
Yes, anything is possible at this point.
In the sport of tennis, a few years ago a South American outsider Marcelo Rios, who actually was ranked #1 in the world for six weeks in 1998, insinuated that the powers-that-be of tennis conspired to protect certain American stars from having their PED test results revealed to the public...
Rios stated that he suspected the ATP protects high-profile Americans of doping: "I know that if nandrolone were found on (Andre) Agassi, they would not disclose it. He is a very prominent, very popular player and if he were to fall, the world of tennis would fall with him. The ATP would not say it. They are such a large dependent organization that it would be a problem if Agassi or (Pete) Sampras tested positive. [We] the South Americans have discussed it repeatedly. It is a complicated subject. I do not have problem in saying it: we always said, (we asked ourselves) who publicly certifies the doping tests of Agassi or Sampras?"
"I would love to be able to see and certify Agassi's doping tests because now I currently have no idea who is doing the test, and who decides who gets it and who doesn't."
"I know that if they were to find nandrolone on Agassi, they wouldn't say it to anybody. It would taint his reputation and bring tennis down dramatically. ATP would not say it. It is such a large organization that it would be a problem if Agassi tested positive."
Would Golden Boy conspire with the Nevada State Athletic Commission to protect the test results of the top American star Floyd Mayweather "three times" in order to perserve his star status and money-making abilities?
Some people apparently do know the truth. Let's hope Gabriel Montoya stays on this story and he can discover and share the truth with the public, who eagerly and curiously await the results of his investigations.

Didnt agassi fail a drugs test but they kept it quiet? VADA is a watershed moment in boxing concerning drugs.

If this is true, this might be the most hilarious thing in boxing since Usman Ahmed's ring entrance.
Re: FLOYD MAYWEATHER POSSIBLY ON PEDS!
Wonder if Amir Khan honours his pledge never to fight anyone
who's tested positive ......

Don't call him money may weather for nothin eh
Re: FLOYD MAYWEATHER POSSIBLY ON PEDS!
sounds like bullshit
mayweather relies on boxing skill anyway. It's not like he is walking through punches or ko'ing fighters.

If Montoys writes an actual story backed my facts and concrete sources perhaps I'll listen. This is just utter bullshit and several levels below even the shitest tabloid journalism.
Outside heavyweights I've never understood where the advantage is for fighter in using PEDs. I thought the main point was neing able to put on shedloads of muscle which increases athletic performance, hence the popularity in baseball and american football. But if you need to make weight, the same weight you've been making for years then surely a PED hinders that. I know nothing about it so grateful if someone could explain why I'm wrong about this.

Agree 100%, why would he insist on drug tests for him and the people he is boxing, he does however use drugs for his hand injuries, which are legal in his state, maybe it could be this and that's why it was dismissed.rapid2 wrote:sounds like bullshit

Re: FLOYD MAYWEATHER POSSIBLY ON PEDS!
America is absolutely awash with sportsmen on drugs.
It also has some of the most pretentious, self-important 'boxing journalists' in the world.
My spidey senses detect this article contains one or both of the above.

Depends on the PED - for instance, there are drugs which will increase the amount of red blood cells, which will in turn increase the fighters ability to carry oxygen around the blood stream giving the fighter a major advantage in stamina. It's the same effect that training at altitude will give, but without the rigour of training at altitude.

Why do so many people still think PEDs automatically = muscle bulk? What about cyclists that test positive? Or boxers using diuretics to make weight? I'm not saying I believe this story or not but skill on its own doesn't win a fight, supreme physical conditioning is required to apply those skills through 12 rounds of boxing and there's no question drugs help with that. James Toney didn't look the part but that doesn't mean he wasn't cheating. Physique is a combination of diet, exercise, lifestyle... throwing PEDs into the equation doesn't automatically equate to being a sculpted physical specimen. Just look at CJ Hunter, former world shot-putt champion.

Very good point. Frans Botha was no Mr Atlas and he failed as well.Matt W wrote:Why do so many people still think PEDs automatically = muscle bulk? What about cyclists that test positive? THere is a really good article by Nigel Colling in this week's boxing news. I think PED usage, esp in the USA, is rampant in boxing.

Re: FLOYD MAYWEATHER POSSIBLY ON PEDS!
Nigel Collins indeed made the statement he felt it safe to assume that the majority of world class boxers use PEDs. (Also, someone said 'Mayweather's not even that built'... well neither are top cyclists. It's nothing to do with muscle. Endurance and ability to fight at a high pace for longer would be the aim surely?).
Nothing surprises me anymore and be great to see all the boxers who have/are using PEDs come out in the open and be named.

does it not stand for Performance Enhancing Drugs ?Trojans44 wrote:If Montoys writes an actual story backed my facts and concrete sources perhaps I'll listen. This is just utter bullshit and several levels below even the shitest tabloid journalism.

Most peds increase muscle mass automatically due to their nature. They usually enable you to train longer which results in being more muscular.
Re: FLOYD MAYWEATHER POSSIBLY ON PEDS!
Dont know much about this but in the statement above the words most and usualy are used indicating that there are PEDS that dont increase muscle surely these are still cheating as well?
Re: FLOYD MAYWEATHER POSSIBLY ON PEDS!
No, it depends what substances are being used and what they are being used for. An athlete might be taking amphetamines to improve alertness and confidence, diuretics to help lose weight, EPO or blood-doping to improve endurance, beta blockers to reduce anxiety and muscle spasms... Fernando Vargas used PEDs that visibly changed his body composition i.e. ratio of body fat to muscle, prior to fighting Oscar De La Hoya but he was still able to compete in the same weight category that he did pre-PED use.kingfinn wrote:Matt W wrote:Why do so many people still think PEDs automatically = muscle bulk? Re: FLOYD MAYWEATHER POSSIBLY ON PEDS!
In terms of more training making somebody more muscular this would depend on the type of training, there is a big difference between using weights for body building and using weights / kettlebells to improve functional power or light weights to improve muscle tone rather than bulk.

I love this. Potentially the boxing news story of the decade and the users here are more interested in which British boxer has the biggest hands. Fascinating.

Re: FLOYD MAYWEATHER POSSIBLY ON PEDS!
In this Mayweather case I guess it could be the use of xylocaine in his hands. I know it's banned in a lot of states but not all and he's admitted using it in the past. I know it might not be classed as a PED in the usual sense but you could certainly fail a drugs test after using it.
Re: FLOYD MAYWEATHER POSSIBLY ON PEDS!
.. imo, even the use of xylocaine should also be completely outlawed. Imagine how much more punch power difference this chemical can make?
