No Bareknucklers!

Post by delisa »

Somebody is going through and adding bareknuckle fights (with comments from the CBZ)

I really think that London Prize Ring Rule fights should NOT be entered into BOXREC

Wasn't that what the editors decided?

(Besides, the entries in amny instances are crediting TKO etc for a bareknucle fight -- there was no such thing -- all LPR fights are either win, loss or draw.)

I agree also. That would just give the opportunity for someone to enter all the supposed bare knuckle fights that Joe Savage (the guy that Bert Cooper knocked out in his pro debut after Savage had supposedly won over 40 bare knuckle fights all knockout prior) had, and others similar.

Oops, sorry..... I thought since John L. Sullivan's record here goes back to 1879, fights that were held before the gloved era could also be included.
The Joe Savage argument's not very strong however... bareknuckle fighting is NOT boxing nowadays, in old days it WAS.

I wasn't aware of your bare knuckle policy. I submitted two location errors (used CBZ as source) that were already in Boxrec.
This is only an outsiders suggestion. Some bare knuckle fights should be included. All of John L. Sullivan's record should be in Boxrec. Use January 1, 1879 as cut-off date. All fighters that had fights before and after that time could have a disclaimer at bottom of the record "had bouts prior to 1879". Database entries, already in, could be purged. Leave the header and, with Mike's permission, refer interested parties to Cyberboxingzone.
Is that possible?
Don't think Hyer, Yankee Sullivan, Heenan, Morrisey, etc belong here. As a courtesy to the database user you can refer them to another site (recommend CBZ-leaving the database card).
Would take a little bit of work to change.

Yes, perhaps a disclaimer that bare-knuckle (exhibition and non-Queensberry) bouts are intentionally not included in the database. Otherwise, casual visitors to the records, thinking we are supposedly recording all known boxing results, will wonder why some well-known bouts of old are missing.

No kidding! I was just stating that it would give someone the go ahead to enter such bouts/fights. If I'm not mistaken, Dane at one time thought that we should have toughman records in the database and may have entered a couple of bouts as well. I'm not for sure though, Matt do you remember?
