I think the term journeyman should shake the negative connotation it has developed in boxing circles. In any other trade it denotes a person who is experienced and competent but unexceptional. I don't see what's wrong with that.

That's the literal meaning, but I always thought in boxing it applied to someone who made their living as 'the opponent'. I guess it would be more accurate to apply it to the sort of guys you get called gate keepers.
