Jamie Arthur retires.

I missed the start of tonights show, but my old man said that it was announced that Jamie Arthur retired.

In case you hadn't heard the news - here is the BBC article confirming the news.

To be honest, not really surprised. A uni mate of mine got to know Arthur very well, he doesn't follow boxing so did not know of his amateur success. Arthur has apparently doing lots of course like GP referral course and personal trainer stuff to try and help pay the bills and continue the boxing. I believe he passed all the courses my mate was on and he said that Arthur was a well spoken, bright lad. However, he said it was clear then that he was thinking that he couldn't live off his career earnings.

I never really believed he would get to domestic title contention, never thought he was the most blessed boxer in Wales (talent wise) but it still sad to hear of his retirement at such an early age.

I disagree stu Arthur was/is a classy boxer, got some lovely moves. His problem however is a lack of power, coupled with fragile skin. Your mate is correct he is a decent fella, i wish him all the best in the future.

Early on I really thought Jamie had the potentional to make an impact at domestic level I was there the night he made his professional debut and thought he looked a talented figher.

But alas it wasn't to be. I wish him well in his future goal as an amateur trainer.

Naturally, he had to have some talent to win the Commonwealth gold. I just feel there were better talent in the Welsh squad who didn't get the gold (Doherty and Kevin Evans especially).

It takes a special fighter to make it to the top with little power and with a fragile skin it was always going to be tough for him to make it in the pro ranks. I personally didn't think he had the skills of a Barry Jones or Damean Kelly who are the only fighters in recent time to make it to the top of the domestic tree with little power.

Arthur had a big heart and was as fit as a fiddle though, he earned his Commonwealth gold by being involved in some tough gruelling fights.

His retirement was motivated by the fact the allegedly allegedly sacked him. Kind soul that he is.

Think his contract was terminated because there's a clause, where if a fighter has two consecutive losses, theres an option to sack him.

I've met Jamie on a number of ocassions and he really is a decent young fella. Sad to see him retire so early but he's probably done the right thing, shows he has a wise head on his young shoulders.

Best of luck to him in his retirement and future goals.
