Eh, Calzaghe v Winky Wright anyone?
This is turning into a farce.
From the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/4238560.stm
Calzaghe's promoter, allegedly, is still hopeful that Lacy's camp will honour a reserve date of 4 February.
But Warren revealed that US promoter Don King has said he can make a fight with ex-light middleweight king Wright.
"Calzaghe versus Lacy will happen on February the 4th unless they pull out," Warren told BBC Sport Wales.
"In the meantime I've spoken to Don King and he says that if there is a problem then he has an option on Winky Wright and we can make that fight."

he's not just any old fighter though is he.steve689 wrote:I can't see how a blown up Light Middleweight will enhance Calzaghe's "Legacy" and how allegedly is making it look that Lacy and co are doing the dirty by pulling out. A usual load of rubbish.
wright is unbeaten in years and just absolutely schooled the most fearsome puncher out there in felix trinidad. he's a big light middle and looked the part at middleweight.
wright knows how to look after himself in there and more than has the ability to beat calzaghe.

Calzaghe v Wright is pure fiction. Such contrived shite is merely an attempt at damage limitation by Team Calzaghe. The BBC website is running the headline:
"CALZAGHE KEEPS WRIGHT AS BACK-UP: Joe Calzaghe's showdown with Jeff Lacy is still alive, but he also has Ronald 'Winky' Wright in his sights."
Pure Bollox, the lot of it!!!! Im getting fed-up of this shit.

I agree with this.steve689 wrote:I can't see how a blown up Light Middleweight will enhance Calzaghe's "Legacy" and how allegedly is making it look that Lacy and co are doing the dirty by pulling out. A usual load of rubbish.
I would like to see Wright in with Taylor or Hopkins first. I think Trinidad's performance flattered Wright a little bit.
Fact is he is a blown up light middle and before Trinidad, no one would have given him much hope - unlike Lacy.
Hahaha more chance of Calzaghe vs Nigel Wright!!
Calzaghe is an absolute joke, same as Warren, the great thing about those two losers showing themselves up on ITV is that even the general public are going to know what a load of bollocks they've got going on at sports network. Calzaghe is seriously worse than Fraudley Harrison.

Warren seems to beable to mention an agreement involving the Lacy and Calzaghe fight on fightnews it looks like anyway.
http://www.fightnews.com/943.htmCalzaghe hits back at Shaw!
September 12, 2005
WBO World Super-Middleweight Champion Joe Calzaghe will be out of the ring until February following confirmation that he broke the meta-carpal bone in his left hand against Evans Ashira on Saturday night in Cardiff.
Calzaghe went to the hospital yesterday and the hand was X-rayed which revealed the full extent of the injury. Now, with his hand set in a plaster for a month, he will have to rest for at least six weeks.
The unbeaten Welshman and his promoter allegedly are bitterly disappointed with the injury as it has postponed the unification showdown with rival IBF Champion Jeff Lacy that was set for 5 November in London.
They say they even more disappointed with Gary Shaw, the promoter of Lacy, following his comments after the fight stating that the Calzaghe's injury is a way of avoiding a fight with Lacy.
Warren said Shaw has had a memory lapse and sometimes speaks before thinking as he tried to make the fight between Calzaghe and Lacy on numerous occasions.
According to Warren, correspondences date back to October 4, 2004 when he first offered Shaw a unification fight against Calzaghe, following Lacy's win over Syd Vanderpool to claim the IBF title, with the aim of making it for either that December or February this year but Shaw did not reply.
Warren says he then sent an email to Showtime boss Jay Larkin on 14 October 2004 with a proposed date of February 5 2005 in England after Lacy had called out for a fight against Calzaghe. In addition, Warren offered to take Calzaghe to America so that the fight could go live on Showtime. An email was also sent to Shaw but again no response. Larkin did reply on the same day and said that Shaw was reluctant to put Lacy in against Calzaghe. A further email was sent to Shaw on 18 October from Warren asking if he would be interested in making the fight on 5 February in London or America, without the WBO or IBF titles on the line, but again no reply.
Warren says he said to Shaw that they could make the fight for September if Lacy withdrew from his IBF title defence on 6 August against Robin Reid and he would pull Calzaghe from his fight in September to make it happen, but Shaw insisted that Lacy would not do that and that he would proceed with the Reid fight first and did not want to lose the Showtime date.
"Therefore, I had to make a fight for Joe as he had to get some rounds under his belt," said Warren. "Shaw say's that Calzaghe has fought "easy" opponents but isn't he forgetting that Lacy has defended his title against two challengers that Joe has already beaten?"
"Robin Reid, Lacy's most recent opponent, was beaten by Joe in over six years ago in February 1999 whilst Omar Sheika was stopped in five rounds by Calzaghe in August 2000, yet he took Lacy the distance last December,"
"Shaw also said that he was told to have a backup plan because Calzaghe was going to fall out. In the draft agreement Shaw sent to me there was a clause, (3b), which was agreed and dealt with the possibility of Joe not fighting:
(b) Interim Bouts. The parties acknowledge that Calzaghe is scheduled to engage in a bout on September 10, 2005. If Calzaghe loses that bout, this Agreement shall be deemed null and void, with neither party owing any obligation to the other. In the event that Calzaghe wins the September 10, 2005 bout, this Agreement shall become automatically binding and effective. SHAW and SN, respectively, shall assure that neither Lacy nor Calzaghe shall engage in any bout or exhibition after the date of this Agreement until the date of the Event, except that (i) Calzaghe may participate in the September 10 bout, and (ii) if Calzaghe wins the September 10 bout but is injured such that he cannot participate in the Event as scheduled, Lacy shall have the right to participate in an interim bout against an opponent of his choice in November of 2005. In the event that Lacy loses such interim bout, shall be deemed null and void, with neither party owing any obligation to the other. In the event that Lacy wins such interim bout, the Event shall be rescheduled to February 4, 2006 (or such other date designated by Showtime Networks, Inc.), and this Agreement shall remain in full force. In the latter circumstances, Calzaghe shall not be permitted to participate in any interim bout whatsoever prior to the rescheduled Event and Lacy shall not be permitted to engage in any interim bout prior to the rescheduled Event other than the interim bout provided for within this Paragraph.
"Joe Will be ready to fight in 2006 and hopefully Lacy will be in the opposite corner," finished Warren."
Unfortunatley, the only 'Super' fight I can see JC fighting in now is Calzaghe - Veit III!!!
This guy is becoming the a laughing stock across the pond and now just across the border!
I think Warren has to show Shaw the x-rays and Calzaghe has to go to America to fight Lacy now, it is the only way he will get some credibility back!

"Let's get one thing straight, there is no way I would use this injury as an excuse to avoid fighting Lacy who I know I can knock clean out," he said.
"I'm the draw and the best in the division and Lacy knows it. That's why he needs me more than I need him.
"What is there to be scared of? Nothing.
"Shaw and Lacy will certainly not dictate to me where and when I fight that is down to allegedly and myself.
"Frank has offered them the chance to fight me before and they are the ones who have turned it down claiming that they are not ready to fight me yet,"
"I don't know who's got the bigger mouth, Lacy or Shaw.
"I want to get it on so I can knock Lacy out once and for all."
I've just picked myself off the floor from laughter!! This is what Calzaghe has just said on alledgedly.tv!

Calzaghe is delusional if he thinks he's a bigger draw than Lacy now. Lacy has serious backing behind him now, he doesn't need Calzaghe at all, he can just go and fight the likes of Kessler, etc to build his own legacy and leave Joe to close out the rest of his career with WBO defences.
I think Joe's injuries are genuine, but I think his attitude is ridiculous, he's not the draw he thinks he is.

Winky has problems with speed, volume and bigger men (obviously). Joe would bring all this and stop the smaller manboxbet wrote:I will take winky v JC anytime. would be a great fight. it would be hard for JC to get through winky's defence. winky is the better boxer maybe. but joe the bigger man, interesting.
Hopkins built his legacy on beating a former super-feather and a former welter. Why can't Joe take a page out of the so called ex-P4P No1s book?

Hopkins built his legacy by cleaning out his division and staying at the top for such a long time whilst facing all his mandatories, and then unifying the titles. The win over DLH was just a bonus, DLH was never anything special above Welterweight in reality.
DLH was never really a super feather, he was weighing in as a Jr Welterweight for those fights due to the way he was allowed to cheat the scales. It's well known in the states.
Joe however hasn't unified the titles, and is fighting a man whose best fighting weight has been 154, whilst Joe's is 168, which is a whole stone in weight difference.
Lacy is a genuine SM who is at or near his peak and best fighting weight. Winky is an ageing LM with little power and would be seriously outgunned. It could be an interesting fight if Winky was able to live with Calzaghe, but my feeling is he would get dismantled due to size and power differential.
Interesting fight, but not a legacy builder in my opinion.
