journeyman- in my eyes boxings the safest sport

Post by James The Great »

Over the years i have had people say many negative things about boxing, mainly safety issues and naive comments, such as its brutal, dangerous, you get hurt etc you know the story. I have always defended this argument because i know how boxing's more a life saver then life taker.
My strongest argument for boxing being a safe sport if (trained properly) is next week i take part in my 60th professional contest, 291 rounds exact, i have been pro since november 2007 and in that time i have never been seriously hurt or badly injured, never even suffered a headache because of a fight. Many of my journeyman mates will say the same, with that being seid wheres my medal lol,
:D anyways just a short post to shed some positive light on boxing, as at the moment we getting alot of bad press, My post isnt much, but its my contribution today. 8)

Great post :TU:

I do think if you stay in boxing too long it can and will cause longterm health damage but that's the difference between British and American boxers, the British tend to retire earlier and leave the sport fairly healthy wheras Americans seem to hold on to the bitter end and sometimes suffer for doing that.

I just checked out your record http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

50 losses out of 60 fights which classifies you as a journeyman in this wonderful sport and i've always thought it's maybe braver going into fights knowing you'll probably lose them and getting hit more then boxers going in them expecting to win.

Well you've had 60 fights since 2007...just curious do you make a decent living from boxing and are you full time?

Top pro James is. Did you ever follow up on becoming an MMA competitor James? Pretty sure you told me you were going to give it a go (unless I've imagined it or gone mad).

I like the sentiment James, but the reality is encephalitis is one thing the following all share:

It's not the knockout punches that cause it, the repeated 'average' punches do the damage.

Freddie Roach is the most obvious example. Doctors attribute his problems to 'cell death' in the brain from trauma / shaking.

And it seems to affect fighters from 'the old days' who'd fight 20 times a year.

WIKI: Jimmy Ellis, Floyd Patterson (who resigned from the New York State Athletic Commission because of his deteriorating memory), Bobby Chacon, Jerry Quarry, Mike Quarry, Jimmy Young, Wilfred Benitez, Emile Griffith, Willie Pep, Sugar Ray Robinson, Billy Conn, Joe Frazier, Fritzie Zivic, and Meldrick Taylor appear to have been genuinely affected by the disorder.[citation needed] Ingemar Johansson may be another victim. In addition, Muhammad Ali's Parkinson's disease was said to be caused by his boxing career, but Ali's own physician Ferdie Pacheco MD states in his Book 'Fight Doctor' that Ali's condition is often misquoted and that Ali, in fact, has Parkinson's Syndrome, which he advises is caused by physical trauma. However, some maintain that this sort of dementia is precisely diagnosed only in autopsy, and claims of retired athletes not having DP are rarely accompanied by autopsy results.[citation needed] On the other hand, diagnosis of Parkinson's disease on the basis of clinical observations is 75-80% accurate.[14]

The reason Americans are more likely to suffer brain damage is not from the number of fights they have but the heavy focus they have on sparring in their training methods. They spar hundreds of rounds in the build up to fights and that's how the damage gets done. We do that less over here.

I gave up working full time as a plumber to box full time, its a decent living, get to spend alot time with family and train everyday which i love doing, also i do abit security work every now again to top my living, but in general boxing pays enough to live off.

Still learning the trade, but not competing for now, the money is terrible in mma at the moment.

Interesting post. I was at James' second fight, against Matt Hainy- Matt was the hometown favourite, James I think late notice- it was a close fight that could have gone either way- and as so often happens always goes to the hometown fighter!

As for the safety aspect, I think that boxers need to be so fit in order to box at all that they are often much healthier than other people because of it. I'm losing weight myself and hoping to train a bit, maybe do some sparring.

Also, I know a LOT of people who have picked up injuries skiing- and often hear of people dying fell walking. So many boxing isn't as dangerous when fair comparissons are made?

I'm happy to take the risk, anyway.

Hard luck on only winning ten times in 60 fights.
Did you try to win many of the others or show up to last a few rounds and get a pay cheque?
Just wondering
