some of the great "cuties" of all time

Post by BrocktonBlockbuster49 »

I think of course the # 1 person here has to be jersey joe walcott, he had more tricks to show an opponent than i ever seen. jack blackburn taught him a lot of them.

he had that amazing shuffle, and then out of nowhere would hit u with an incredible sucker punch. he shuffled and weaved and drawed louis in in the 4th round of there 1st fight and louis threw a right and walcott just came out of nowhere with a hard right and sent louis embarrasingly on the canvas.

and of he did the greatest sucker punch i have ever seen when he walked slowly with his hands down into charles then ducked charles jab and threw a sharp left hook that turned his head almost completely around and charles was out.

he was a master technician. eddie futch said he is on of the greatest technicions in the ring in boxing history.

who are some other "cuties"

jack johnson was defintely one

James J Braddock was "Cute" or thats what he was always described at, he never really got the full brunt of a punch, well at least not until he fought max baer.

I think he did alright against Baer, too, but not so alright vs. Louis!! :D The saddest thing about boxing these days is the lack of different styles and the "cutie" is among the missing. The one guy who is of fairly recent vintage and that could be termed a 'cutie', I guess (hell, Ring had an article on "cuties" in general and crowned him the last of), is Greg Haugen. That is true to the extent that he was harder to hit than it appeared, didn't hit as hard as many thought early on, and had underrated boxing skills. Saoul Mamby also would qualify and maybe Buddy McDGirt on some nights.

..saul mamby of recent vintage was the cutest defensive fighter in years......ken overlin, a middle weight champion few remember could drive his opponents nuts......charles tagged him with the "cutie" label.

jersey joe...on a good night against the right style.....amazing. heard joe louis talking about him once in an interview and...if you can sum up the bomber's voice and speech pattern in your head....said something like this...."that walcott...he stand and look at you and you think he's coming in and you get set and he liable to step five feet away...then come back and clock you one.....and yu try to counter and he's gone again."

A "cutie" is a fighter who doesnt have any stand out skills or attributes but still manages to find a way to win. Jersey Joe was too skilled and had too much power to be considered a cutie. Greg Haugen is indeed a good example. Joey Maxim and Fritzie Zivic are all-time great "cuties".

I always thought a cute boxer was the type of fighter that knew all the little tricks in the game and ususally was pretty slick and made othe fighters look bad against him...sort of like a James Toney.

I've always thought the term "cutie" had a couple of different meanings. One is a clever fighter with quick hands who won't knock many people out, but will always frustrate the hell out of you ...

Like the late Jimmy Young.

A "cutie" is also a young lady who won't necessarily turn heads on the street, but damned if she don't start growing on you if look at her long enough.

hey great one in james toney!!!

i feel right now hes the best cutie in boxing and his fighting style right now in the hevayweight divsiion reminds me of jersey joe walcott, except of course not as good as waclott.

like walcott, james does amazing feints and fakes and is very smart, and also has great defensive boxing skills and has power to KO u, not to mention hes great at sucker punching.

How about Vinnie Curto, the ultimate journeyman "cutie". More recently, I think Manning Galloway falls ino this category as well.

In Boxing terms my interiptation of a 'cutie' is a highly skilled fighter who know and uses all the little subtle skills not often seen in Boxing in both their offence and defence.
