Brook-Jones Commentary

I thought the first 6 rounds of commentary was awful last night. For those rounds Jones just walked forward in straight lines without letting his hands go and Brook outclassed him, but the way Smith and Watt described it Brook was proving himself to be the next Naz and Jones was asking him serious questions (which he obviously did go on to do).

It seems to me that Sky are so desperate for him to be a star that this colours all coverage and leads to a real lack of objectivity. Brook is clearly a good fighter and showed real heart last night, but Sky are playing largely to an audience of knowledgable boxing fans for this kind of show and I find the way they go over the top about him to be annoying and, in the case of last night, patronising.

Oh for the days when commentators would actually describe what was happening...

Agree totally, the commentary these days is patronising and babyish at best, that is being kind to it.

Smith shushed me at a fight recently because I was talking too loudly, the irony wasn't lost on me. To be fair, though, I am known for my booming Brian Blessed voice and the guy could hardly hear himself shout.

Sky aren't alone in this though, C5 and allegedly are just as bad for talking up the house fighters.

Very well said. Smith is very annoying. The arse kissing is a bit cringeworthy.

Smith has really turned into a cheerleader of the highest order since he became the Head of Boxing on Sky. Ever since he hitched his wagon to the Matchroom train his hype about Brook, Froch and Khan has gone into overdrive. Its akin to a promoter rather than being an objective reporter.
By having that ability to control the boxing output that's all well and good (albeit annoying) however his shilling of his new book on Ringside a few weeks back I think crossed the line. The premise of the book is on families behind the boxers and I thought the wheeling out of a few boxers and their mothers on the show was such a desperate attempt to sell copies it was cringeworthy. Rant over!!

At first I assumed there were different standards for the proles and world champions, but Adam has been educated in the ways of etiquette so there's no way he would, say, rudely shush one guy and overlook another. Once I dicounted this wild theory, I literally could not think of why what was good for one wasn't good for another.

I've thought about that but I can't watch a live fight without the crown noise.
