Ryan Aston Vs Curtis Valentine

Post by saturday_kid »

Did anyone see this fight?

Obviously heard the result and am shocked.

Knew Valentine was dangerous but honestly thought Aston was a real cut above, very good amateur and has looked the part up until now in the pro game, wonder if anything went wrong.

I stayed and watched it. Aston tryed to stand and trade with valentine, and it didnt work. Im surprised they let it carry on after the first knockdown to be honest, aston was stuck in the ropes like a caught fish at one stage. Shame because ive watched aston before and he looked good. I heard someone say on the way out that he'd been down a few times on the am's, is this true?

I thought it was the most dramatic and violent fight of the night, well worth staying back for. Aston was too stiff and upright, Valentine got close and threw bombs and most landed flush. As the previous poster has observed, its a wonder it wasn't stopped sooner. I noticed the ref would be looking at the wrong guy - he was watching Curtis. If he'd turned his head and looked at Aston, who was lurching around behind him like he was on roller skates, it would have been stopped sooner.

Aston was disgusted with his corner for throwing in the towel but he was getting badly hurt and from my position I didn't think he had a hope in hell of doing anything but get knocked out. He wouldn't have survived that second round.

I'm surprised as anyone when I heard. the televised outings I'd see of him were blow-outs.

Getting stopped in 2 rounds at area level by a relative novice with a 4-2 record speaks volumes.

You could cut him some slack if it was a seasoned veteran of 50 fights on points... But a stoppage to someone completely green is hard to fathom.

If he ditches his corner and heaps the blame on them, it will show he also lacks intelligence outside the ropes as well as in it.

He needs to take ownership of why he lost. But regardless it doesn't bode well for the future. Pity as nice kid.

I was at the weigh-in on Friday, Aston originally 7ounces overweight, came back 10 mins later and still 4ounces over, maybe he was struggling to make weight? He looked cut so I dont think it would be a case of under preparing. Didn't stick around for the fight but just thought id share the above.

this fight was the best 10 mins of the night and the whole evening was decent entertainment. we managed to blag better seats after the main event..not difficult with the pie eating security!!

the boxer traded with the slugger...always a mistake, i hope it was not the corners plan to do this, i think it was perhaps their fighters machismo that drove him in that direction. he certainly did a funny dance.

Not shocked a bit -Valentine is a World-Class puncher.....(although a novice)....he kayoed about 18 of 22 (ish) amature fights (nearly all 1st round) with headguards/big gloves/3 rounds etc....yes he is off balance etc and can be out-boxed but he is as tough as fornicate- if he can tidy his footwork up - he will ask a few questions = dangerous fight for anyone to take....which is obviously why he has had only 6 fights in 2 years as a pro- i hope a promotor snaps him up and gets him some work

I'm not shocked either. Valentine is a heavy handed spiteful puncher. When in shape he'll be a match for most.

Was a big shock to me, I expected Aston to beat Valentine, he is much bigger, faster, more skillful and hits hard himself, Ochieng beat Valentine quite readily before and took some of his shots without problems and Ochieng is smaller then Aston, from what I have read so far, it seems like a case of recklessness on Aston's part, never brawl with a brawler, I am sure Ryan Aston will come back from this a better fighter and still achieve, after all he has had setbacks in the amateurs before and come back better, plus he is still very young, it only takes one punch in boxing, best thing is to avoid as much as possible.

aston did try to wheel around the ring after a few brawls but curtis did cut the ring off well and kept catching aston with his hands slightly lowered and just shot straight rights through

there was alot of ryan moving around like this

then he would move to rope and this would happen:

Ryan Aston should have took the centre of the ring and controlled Curtis Valentine off the Jab, forcing him back, by doubling up the jab and landing a fast hard back hand, whilst bringing the uppercut into place when Valentine jumps in, put him where he is less dangerous, backing onto the ropes is suicide against a puncher, unless you have an excellent defense and continue to counter, Ryan's positioning on the ropes does not look good. Different tactics next time, different result.

Im part of Astons camp , got to admit it wasn't the Ryan Aston we all no in there., all prep he's had as just been to box Curtis don't get involved in a war,and for some reason he got in there and wanted to trade. Curtis showed how much he wanted it and big credit to him, hope he gets looked after a guided to the top, very strong lad. Has for Ryan we all no how good this lad his and hell be in gym working and improving on his mistakes...and I believe he can still get to the top.. For boxing fans tho what a great 2 rounds but we did the right thing getting him out of there..... Back to the drawing board ....

Boxing full of high and lows ......

Thanks for taking the time to post and comment.

Health is paramount and all in attendance have written that he was in desperate trouble and the ref should have done his job better. So don't reconsider your actions, because Ryan's wellbeing was the only thing on your minds.

Does anyone know if the fight was recorded? I've had a quick search on YouTube and can't find anything yet.

I, like many others was surprised when I checked the result out. Valentine has trouble written all over him sure, but seeing Ryan box amateur, Pro and in the gym I thought he would nullify Curtis' stalking style using his skills. Perhaps Ryan got drawn into a test of his machismo and got found out a bit. That's not taking anything away from Curtis who has now got a scalp on his record of considerable note and pedigree and also an area title so well done Curt. I'm sure Ryan will come back stronger from the experience and find out where it all went wrong and build on it.

Ryan is still the talent we all know, this blip will not change that, it will make him work on his defense more and use his head more, I remember what another Ryan said, Ryan Rhodes in answer to my question how he had got better with age ? he replied " when I was younger I fought with my balls, now I fight with my head " I still think Ryan Aston can beat the other top prospects in the Middleweight division, but he might have to wait a bit longer now.

Here it is

Looks like he got ambushed in the clinches, Curtis got loose and swung some almighty punches to his chin, which he keeps way up in the air, could see his legs go a bit after that. The kd punch was a finisher, he did well to get up. Ryan tried to turn tables in the 2nd, but he'd slowed enough by then for Curtis to finish him. Think he'll see his corner saved him there.

I remember Valentine from his amatuer days. Horrible, disgusting power.

Though I thought Aston would box his way to a decision, I honestly had a small feeling that this might happen. Aston got stopped a few times as a junior in the amateurs. And Hosea Burton dropped him en route to winning a decision in the 2010 ABA's.

Valentine, though a novice in comparison, has been matched toughly as a pro. He sparked Luke Robinson (undefeated ABA finalist) in his first professional fight. He lost close fights to unbeaten Eric Ocheing and Alistair Warren on points.

I think he failed a brain scan - hence the inactivity of 2011, but has rebounded with a KO of Lee Murtagh and now a title winning performance against the touted Aston.

Aston can come back, but needs to learn to not neglect his defence. It all depends now on his mental make-up. Me personally, I think he can still come good. he has a good team around him, and has a good head on his shoulders.

If Valentine is now handled properly it will be interesting to see how far he can go. I'd like to see a Midlands title clash with Peterborough's Cello Renda. :box: Can't miss cracker that!
